Hello, I've never been to PR, but I've seen pics, and it seems to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I'm a blue collar machinist by trade, and have also drove taxi for several years before that. Every now and then I get an urge to up and leave Pennsylvania for "greener pastures", and Puerto Rico is on my short list of places I'd think I'd like to live. The problem is I'm not college educated, so if I did move there I'd have to work in the hospitality field, or drive cab, or find work as a machinist. Do you have to be filthy rich to live a decent life down there? Or can an average guy like myself make it? I'm not expecting to live in a 5 million dollar condo overlooking the ocean, but I don't want to live in the slums, with no running water either! Can anyone help me out?

From my obsevations from living on the island for a year you would probably have a very difficult time. Have you checked the islands unemployment rate?

Your best chance is the west coast. There are quite a few gringos here who live the "surf life" by finding odd jobs around town. It is possible, now is it desirable? That is for you to decide.

Default wow!!!!

Hey, Gringo with all your respect, think twice before packing your things and leaving all you have to disembark here. Just read the local news and you will find out for yourself, to give you an idea American Airlines is canceling 60% or more of its flights from Puerto Rico the only destination they will fly is to florida state. From 150+flights they will only have 33 outbound. This is a red flag that things are not good here or elsewhere.

gato!!!

I am a native puertorican and I left the Island 9 years ago. When I left the job situation was starting to go down hill. I still visit every 6 month and things are just getting worst. But like they say where there is a will there is a way. The hospitality industry is always looking for billingual people, which means your best bet is to start learning spanish if this is what you really want to do.

My wife and I just spent a week of "vacation" in the island ghetto known as Puerto Rico. Never again.

Visit first. You'll change your mind.

WB , I knew I recognized your name from the PA posts...

While PR is a beautiful island, but it has its downfall. Getting a job is difficult and the wages are pretty low while the commodity is expensive. My parents live on the island and only survive because of my dad's pension. However, even college educated people are having a tough time getting a decent job. Stay where you are at and come to PR for vacation.

If you drove a cab before you will be fine.Go get your license to drive a cab and just drive in the tourist areas and pick up tourists at hotels and take em where they wanna go.You can do this from 6am to 4pm mon thru friday and make a good living plus you know english which will be helpful for tips plus the fare.I'm speaking from working at a hotel ans seeing the hours and the money these guys made and you don't have to work nights or weekends.
