Cost of living in USVI is much higher. I'm always amazed at the prices at Plaza Los Americas versus the ripoff prices we have to pay to survive in the USVI. Higher population served in PR, lower prices, lower cost of living overall. And you won't see Starbuck's (for what that's worth), Walmart or many other franchised businesses in the V.I. Most companies are smart enough to do their research and understand the "way" things work around here. The Renaissance Hotel, for example, was bought by one of the most successful Mexican hosptiality companies. They wanted to close for renovations, but our wonderful legislature, in its infinite wisdom, wanted all the employees paid full pay, benefits, etc., during the closure and tried to tell the company how to run their business. One legislator even referred to the company as "those damn mexicans." They threw in the keys and walked away. It's been closed for years. A new owner is in place, but it will be awhile before the place reopens. I guess our overpaid, underworked government employees taught them a lesson.
The VI is very beautiful and has such great proximity to other islands. People from all over the Caribbean live there, so it's a different experience. On any given day, you can hear English, Spanish or Kreyol spoken. You can get Dominican food, Trinidadian food, American food etc. So the VI wins this one for me...
