Just curious, the population of Guam seems fairly small - like 150,000.

But the U.S. military population moving there - I heard mostly relocating from Okinawa, will make the numbers much bigger.

Is life in Guam predominately oriented around the military base - i.e. the economy mostly dependent on it, and most jobs connected to it? Are soldiers something that is very commonplace throughout Guam? Particularly whatever main cities there seems to be?

Additionally, where do most Japanese tourists go when they visit Guam?

I visited Guam once for a week and being prior military I did take notice and look for the base and signs of it, of which I saw very little. I think the people there do their own thing and don't rely on the military there. the island was beautiful and you can tell the people take care of it.

For a place as isolated and with as small a population as Guam it's a pretty significant presence. It's mostly USAF (Andersen AFB). There are several US Navy bases and a joint US Navy/USCG base. They want to move several thousand US Marines from Japan to Guam by 2014 as well.

It's a far cry from the almost non existent military presence on December 8th 1941 when the Japanese invaded ....
