If you type in the "reason for current employment status" box "TEMP ASSIGNMENT" they will -usually- not even look further than verifying that the assignment really was through a temp agency. Temp assignments are temporary, they're not meant to last very long, you are hired knowing that there will be an end date to your employment.

You never worked for that assignment's company. You were there as a representative of the agency, not an employee of the company. And so, you didn't quit the temp assignment's company, because you were never employed by them in the first place. You are still employed by the temp agency. And therefore - the reason you are not earning money at a job right now, is simply "temp assignment."

I have been unemployed since March 2010 and am currently on my 2nd Tier of benefits about to move to my 3rd Tier on the week ending Feb. 26 2011. My original claim ends on at the end of March 2010.

I got a call from a temp agency last week and one of their clients was looking for someone with my skills. I thought what the heck lets at least entertain it. I felt like it was a good thing to try them out and they could try me out so to speak. Did all my interviews, etc. and the client decided they liked me.

I worked one day for 2 hours and another day at 8 hours and another day at 8 hours for a total of 2 days and 2 hours (18 hours total). The fit did not feel right at all so I decided not to go back. I claimed the hours on my continued claim form like you are suppose to do so edd can take the deductions from my ui and listed the temp agencies address and name on the form.

I am now freaking out if the temp agency will contact edd to say that I did not go back, etc. or if edd will contact the temp agency. My UI claim was not filed on the temp agency but on my original employer that I was laid off of after 15 years. I made about $400 for the days that I worked thru the temp agency. Will this cause a problem moving from Tier 2 to Tier 3, etc and what happens when I go to re-certify after a year (end of March 2010). Thanks for any input and opinions you might have. Kind of freaking out here if I might have caused a problem with moving to other Tiers and or re-certifying.

You just made your former employer that was PAYING for your UI very happy. He is no longer paying to support you.

From what I understand, tier benefits are not paid by the employer.

I worked for a temp agency. We were ALWAYS contacted whenever someone worked for us and had or filed an unemployment claim. We kept very thorough notes on everything. If someone did what you did and attempted to collect UI benefits we'd fight the claim. We'd hand over all the notes in your file and show that you were not fired or let go, but that you chose to voluntarily leave the job.

Not quite. While he's an employee of the temp agency, if he didn't complete the assignment his records will show that he quit an assignment. For some agencies that's actually enough to terminate the employee completely.

Like I said, I worked at a temp agency and ANYTIME we were mentioned on a claim we were contacted and we always gave them all information we had regarding the employee and assignment.

I read through all the responses, Bodyboarder you quit before the assignment was over. From what I've seen and from what the company I worked for saw, most states were contacting all previous employers on all claims. States are broke, they're not going to pay if they don't have to. Not only that, but you lied. I personally wouldn't be vindictive, but if unemployment contacted me verifying your employment I'd tell them exactly what happened.

And quitting a job because it wasn't a good fit is ridiculous. People work jobs they hate all the time, it's a part of life.

I wanted to add that a lot of temp agencies deal with high UI costs due to the nature of the business and will try to minimize them any way they can. So, even though your claim wasn't based on them, they are still affected by UI costs because of your actions and will tell EDD exactly what happened. It's unlikely they will let this go easily.

I decided to part ways with my full-time employer of 4 years to take an assignment with a temp-agency. I took the position because it was in my chosen field (I have been having trouble finding work after college) and because I was told it was a 40-hour per week position, with the possibility of being taken on with the company. Things have not worked out that way and I now work 20 to 25 hours per week, if there is any work at all.

Is it possible to apply for UI since I am working part-time and through an agency?

While one can hope for the best, yes, brace for the liklihood the best case scenario is your benefits are suspended until you rebuild earnings, which means accepting and working through assignments that are not your dream job.
