My husband filed a partial unemployment claim on 2/1/11. He hadn't worked since 1/26/11 and each week, he was getting hours cut. He did work on 2/1/11 for 10 hours, but he went ahead and filed anyways because he was told hours would be cut. So, the next day, 2/2/11, he goes into work and is laid off due to lack of work available. We received his papers in the mail at the end of the week with his PIN and monetary explanation. So, on 2/7/11 he filed his first weekly claim for weekending 2/5/11. He claimed the 10 hours worked on Tuesday and nothing else. He also had put in 2 applications and he reported that as well. It told him that since he had worked, he had to reopen his claim online in 48 hours. So, on 2/9/11 (2 days later), he went to reopen online, but it was the same questions and processes that he had done originally. Nothing signaled a re-opening. He went ahead and finished it. On Monday, 2/14/11, he tried to claim his second week and it told him he had no weeks available.

He has tried everyday, twice a day this week to file for last week and it won't let him claim it. What could be the problem? Should he go into the unemployment office and find out why he can't make claims?

Virginia unemployment is extremely annoying, at least it was when I tried filing for unemployment. The best thing to do is go to the unemployment office in person and do NOT call the state office unless necessary. I tried filing for unemployment in person but was originally unqualified b/c I didn't make taxable income in 2007. When I was potentially eligible to file under the alternative date (?) a few months later the unemployment office told me to do it through someone at the state office. This is what I got:

"Welcome to the VA Unemployment...press 1 for English...bunch of other stuff...If you want to speak to a representative please press BEEEEEEEEEEEP. If you want to speak to a representative please press BEEEEEEEEEEEP. If you want to speak to a representative...."

I tried it multiple times throughout the week and eventually became super mad. It seemed as though the VA state unemployment office was purposely trying to keep people from filing (*conspiracy*). I just got sick and tired of trying and decided to focus on freelance writing instead of trying to file. My dad still complains to this day that I should try to collect back pay from it. So, I recommend going to an office and asking them to help you contact the state office if necessary (instead of going through that mess, but it's been almost 2 years so hopefully it's a little better).

P.S. The people at the local unemployment office seemed semi-friendly and helpful, so they seem easier to deal with. However, that automatic phone system was the last straw for me after months of worry about how I would survive without a job. Virginia is supposedly not as bad in terms of unemployment as some states, so hopefully your husband will find a job soon (*fingers crossed*) .
