I was laid off in July 2010 and have been collecting unemployment since then, I am currently on Tier 2. Last week when I went to file online I was not able to complete filing and it prompted me to call in my claim. I did this and it was fine, so today I go to claim online again and now it is telling me that my benefit year has expired and that I need to qualify for a new claim. Can anyone explain this to me?? I am in the middle of tier 2 and have about 9 weeks left I believe. What do I need to do in order to continue collecting through the tier benefits if I can not find a job. Any explanation or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!!

In NJ (and other states as well) once your benefit year expires (meaning a full calendar year from the start of your claim), it triggers a point of review in the system. If you had some kind of earnings in the last year and qualify for a NEW claim, you'd get it at this point. If you haven't worked at all (as what seems to be the case per your post), then you'd continue with whatever level of EUC you're on.

What you need to do though is to call unemployment explaining that your claim year is expired and you're trying to recertify. NJ was supposed to put this into the automated system to avoid having to have a rep do this manually in a computer but I don't think they have. Try calling just before they open in the morning (and keep hitting redial) and you should get through.

Dealing with those people SUCKS.

They cut me off the nano-second my college externship ended. As If I was going to get a job instantaneously in THIS economy. Uh huh.

The cherry on top was the jobsworth on the phone getting pissy at me when I complained that our area has a high percentage of illegals that are taking our jobs.

They are the borg. Resistance is futile. *eye roll*

The same exact thing happened to me today... Benefit year expired. I have not worked at all in a year and understand that I must recertify to continue my EUC 2 claim.

My question is that because getting through on the phone is impossible, can I just drive down to the re-employment office and recertify there?

Thanks!

Absolutely!! Many people on this board routinely visit the NJ offices. You are fortunate you have an office to visit. In WI, it's phone/internet only. Addresses of where these people actually work is a big secret.

Yup, from what I understand you can do this in person if you can't get through. I personally called at 7 am on Friday morning and only had to wait five minutes (which is why I recommend calling early as it seems to be the only way to get through.)

This as well happened to me, i was laid off in March of 2010, and my benefit was reviewed in march of this year, you should be fine, if you worked the will recalculate your earnings if not it should remain the same

I'm "paying it forward" because I too recently passed my 1-year anniversary and got the "benefits are not payable at this time" message. Then I tried another number and constantly got the "due to the high volume of calls..call again later" message.

I Googled like crazy to find other extensions/phone numbers besides the one on the DOL website. I found the following passage:

"Here are the numbers:
732-761-2020 and 2021
732-761-2029
201-601-4100
856) 507-2340.

Call each one the 732 ones usually work, when they tell you the time will be 20 minutes it WILL BE, so I put the phone down and check every 5-10 min, and after about 15-20 min, you do get an operator, every time, but I usually move between the 732 numbers, and get an operator and you can get an operator."

I did this earlier today and it WORKED LIKE A CHARM!! I was getting so desperate, I was about to borrow money to drive from New England to a One-Stop center in NJ and try to use one of the phones there to talk to a live person (though I've heard even that trick isn't working as well these days). Keep in mind, these lines are for CERTIFICATION PROBLEMS ONLY. If you need to file or reopen a claim, you're gonna get transferred to one of the other "busy" numbers.

Like the poster above said, call at 8:30AM on the nose and keep hitting redial! I did it, had a wait time of 5 minutes and recertified easily with an agent. Hopefully this is the last time I gotta deal with the phone issues. I almost cried when the agent said my problem was resolved. I'm so grateful, I had to share with others in the same boat.

Good luck to all!!
