New Federal Unemployment Insurance Extensions

Glad I have a job now but there are nearly 100,000 people who are going to be cut off.

Never collected a day of unemployment in my life.... Then again, I always considered any job better than no Job... Lots of field work for folks this time of year...

Yes, I am a Socialist, and believe in a strong safety net, worker retraining and such... Fact is some job sectors are not coming back, folks got to move on to something else.. Be willing to take less pay, do less than ideal jobs so on and so forth..

I was once able to say that. Not really a badge of honor anymore considering the numbers of people who've been forced to take it. The problem is, while the economy has improved, there are still more people needing jobs than there are jobs at the moment. Working in the fields is a great idea but some are not physically able to do certain jobs but are still willing to work.

Well people do pay into it so it's not like it's a free handout. I'd rather my money went into direct transfer programs like this than to a bunch of unnecessary Federal government bureaucrats and contractors who are no more productive than the unemployed.

I think after the regular state unemployment is exhausted and you still don't have a job its time to either lower your expectations as to what you're willing to do or move to another area with better prospects. What is that, nine months? Any more time than that not working and you're seriously hurting your resume.

The unemployment extensions need to go, they should be replaced with jobs programs (targeting the long-term unemployed) and education programs.

The federal government, because Republican craziness, is so dysfunctional that no sane policies can get passed though...But hey, let's give America want it deserves: peasantry.

Actually a relocation subsidy would be useful. We have very low unemployment and a lot of "help wanted" signs up near where I live in Northern VA. For example I was at my vet's office this week and saw they're looking for assistants. Our state unemployment rate is 5 or 6% and in this part of the state more like 2-3%. I doubt anyone here with a college degree is unemployed. COL is comparable and taxes are lower than in CA. This should be The Promised Land for the unemployed or underemployed. It's pretty easy finding a job around here.

Perhaps a little, but there is no area of the country that has a hot employment market. All major metro areas have historically high unemployment rates, its just that some are higher than others. Furthermore, the primarily issue for the educated work force is being under-water in their home so the subsidy would have to be huge.

This could have some marginal effect with young lower-skilled workers, but the money would be better spent creating jobs throughout the country.

If you took 1 million unemployed folks from around the country and relocated them to VA all you'd achieve is an increase in the unemployment rate in VA.

Also, though Virginia is creating jobs at roughly twice the pace of California (relative to the size of the populations) California's job growth is still around 3 times higher than Virginia. Job growth, rather than the unemployment rate, is the most important thing if you're talking about relocating people.

UI is an employer funded program. A few states have the employee paying a minimal percentage but nothing near 100% of a weekly benefit amount.

I agree... too many people are holding out for the perfect job "because I have 5 months of UI remaining."

A viable strategy I suppose... until the UI checks stop coming. The extensions are far too long... there has to be more incentive for people to go find a job... and there isn't.

I was a resident of Georgia and had just started my Tier 2 extension when I found my job in Washington state last year. I didn't hesitate to move... there was nothing in Georgia and time was running out on UI.

It's insurance. You regularly pay the premiums in case you need to use it ... like when you are unemployed.

It's not as if the UI benefits is the equivalent all or most of your wages. You cannot live on UI alone -- unless you're living at home with your parents. What's a disincentive about UI benefits is that as soon as someone tries to supplement income by taking p/t or odd jobs or go back to school to get training, UI benefits end.
