Hello, I need help here. I was still collecting my unemployment and I was in Tier 1. I still had money to come in and all of a sudden I get a message while collecting online saying my claim from last year has expired. I thought I was guaranteed UI for 99 weeks in NJ? I had no warning of this and now I am freaking out. I haven't been able to find a job at all.
I filed for a new claim, would that help me?

Per FAQS:
Quote:
8. I've been collecting for a year and am on Tier 2. My claim expires next week. What happens now?
Some states automatically perform the recertification process as long as you continue to file weekly or biweekly claims. In most states, you will need to telephone your state to RECERTIFY your claim. Your state will do a monetary reevaluation for a new claim. If you have not had eligible earnings during your past benefit year, your "application for a new claim" will be denied, your old claim reopened and you continue to receive benefits on that claim. You may receive confusing correspondence at this time, especially in Illinois. Be sure to telephone your state if this happens - and keep claiming if the system allows.

In NJ you need to recertify your claim by actually telephoning NJ in order to continue receiving benefits at your benefit year end. Filing a new claim online in NJ is not the correct procedure.
Call NJ Monday to straighten this out.
All unemployment benefit payments end 12/29/2012. Anyone who has filed this year, under current legislation will not receive more than 52 weeks without additional action by Congress. If Congress does not extend the current legislation beyond 12/29, your benefits end.

Well, the NJ unemployment rate is going up. So has NY's. I think we may be seeing increases in some of the other states later in the year, as well.
Tough times.

If this is the case, what do you think that means for the Dec. 29 cut off date?

Congress will probably extend in its present form for a least two months until after the Inauguration - all dependent on economy, fiscal cliff, and Congressional gridlock at year-end. Then they'll fight about how they want the program to look the rest of 2013. Couple of years ago legislation lapsed for five weeks, but that was in June, not the holiday season in December. US is in a deep hole. By September EB will be completely gone and many more of the long-term unemployed will have exhausted their benefits. Barring a black swan event - like a world financial collapse - they will do something, albeit temporarily.

That doesn't sound good. Not at all.
I hope that the government will try to create more jobs, or at the very least employers ease up on hiring requirements.
I'm pretty sure that this forum will be crazy when the deadlines grow closer.
