Since all extension might end next year I was wondering what my eligibility for a new claim would be. My current claim is dated 2/2012-2/2013 with a base year of 10/2010-9/2010 and a weekly benefit of around $300. Would it be possible to open up a new claim when this one expires, based on the unused base periods of the current jobs benefit years and the base periods of a summer temp job I held?the current claim based on my old job base year period ended 9/2011. Can I start a new claim with quarter ending 12/31/2011- around $6500 , quarter ending 3/2011 around $4400...... Then quarter ending 6/2011 would be from my new temp job- around $2000, and quarter ending 9/2011 from new temp job- around $2000. If I'm still unemployed and congress doesn't pass extensions would this qualify for a new claim? Thank you in advance for any help
Sorry about that, I'm in New Jersey. My claim says it ends in feburary of 2013 but the money in my account seems to run out in the 2nd week of January 2013. So this claim is just for state benefits. It seems tier 1 would have started in January but probably won't with the current law. Do you think I'd be eligible for a new claim with my 2011/2012 base year pay? Thank you!
Hi,
I first became unemployed 05/2011 and filed right away. I found work in 08/2011, (called to stop benefits) and the job ended 02/2012. I called and NJ reopened my claim beginning 03/12. I'm not sure if they opened a totally new claim, but I did receive a "blue" benefits letter. It's now Oct 2012, and my benefits are ending in 11/2012. I was told it would automatically roll into extended benefits, but those would end in Jan 2013. Can I re-apply for benefits? For some reasons, the NJ reps made it seem as once the EB ended, that was it. No more benefits, forever! It's late friday, and I'm on edge. I plan on going to my nearest call center on Monday, but any guidance will absolutely be helpful. Thank you.

Reason: For clarity
My initial claim began 05/2011. I found work 08/2011, at which time I informed NJ. Work contract ended 02/2012. I called NJ & they reopened claim. I'm not sure if they opened a totally new claim, but I did receive a "blue" benefits letter. I was told it would end 11/2012 & Extended Benefits would automatically kick in and end 01/2013. Would I be able to open a new claim, and if so when? I borrowed Ariadne33's questions hoping it would make things clearer. Thank you in advance.
What state are you in? NJ
Where are you in your claim? ending 11/2012
Are you collecting EUC (federal tiers) now - or just state benefits? state benefits
If state benefits, will you begin federal tier 1 before year-end? If so, when? I believe Tier 1 (Extended Benefits) begin Nov or Dec 2012 .
You should have a claim expiring either 2/2013 or 5/2013 - not 11/2012.
What is the weekly benefit amount of 5/2011 claim?
What weekly benefit amount did NJ pay you when you reopened claim in 2/2012?
Did you receive any EUC under the first claim?
What is your weekly benefit amount now?
What I think has happened is NJ reopened your old claim in 2/2012 and continued payments on that until 5/2012 (the bye).
Then, in 5/2012 at your bye, NJ opened a new claim for you based on your earnings for the previous 12 months, plus any unused earnings from your earlier employer not used in your first base year. This claim has provided 26 weeks' state benefits which you will exhaust in November 2012. At that time, NJ will put you on EUC until the end of the year.
If NJ has used all your earnings from 8/2011-2/2012 for this new 5/12 claim and you have not worked since 5/2012, there will no earnings available for a new claim next year. Whatever you receive on this current claim will be it. You will need to check with NJ to determine of there are any unused earnings on your record which would create new claim eligibility in 5/2013.
Now, with any luck, Congress will extend EUC into 2013. If that happens, then you will continue to receive EUC. Otherwise, your payments end 12/29/2012. If that happens, of course, call NJ. They may find a way to open yet another claim. But don't count on it.
My weekly benefit has been the same since day 1, $611. To my knowledge I haven't received any EUC.
Thank you for the thorough & quick answer. Much appreciated. Oh, so if for say, I get a consultant job that lasts for 3,4,6 months, I'll be able to reapply when the job is done? Another words, I need to gain employment in order to open/start a new claim?

Well, if your benefit has never changed, either you don't have a new claim at all and, unbeknownst to you, NJ recertified the original claim and is paying you EUC from the first claim - or - coincidentally the new claim opened 5/2012 provides exactly the same benefit as the 5/2011 claim. It happens, but I wonder.
I suggest you call NJ to see what, if any, earnings are available for a new claim. Ask them about your 8/2011-2/2012 earnings. Were those used for a new claim in May?
If they answer, yes. Then you will need to work again to qualify for a new claim.
If they answer, no. Then those earnings should be available for a new claim, possibly before you begin Tier 1 in November. NJ does have to test for new claim eligibility at that time before transitioning you to any federal EUC money.

Yes, provided you are paid on W-2, you can apply for benefits when that job ends.
I started my claim on Jan 2012 - my last week to claim was yesterday May 5th. Since I have not been able to find employment can I file a new claim ?
