Until October, I was working full time in Connecticut. I then left that job and took a part time position in New York to pursue a career in the field I studied. The bsuiness closes for the last 2 weeks in December and I was told by Human Resources that most employees collect unemployment for those two weeks. This is the first time I will ever be collecting unemployment so I am very unfamiliar with the process. I have 2 questions:
1. I am going to file a claim in NY but since I worked in Connecticut, do I need to do anything extra to ensure my CT wages are going to be in the caluclation?
2. There were 2 weeks since I started working the part-time job that I only worked 2 days because I was not needed on the schedule. Can I file a claim for those 2 weeks? Will my current employer be notified?

Assistance is appreciated. Thank you.

Your Connecticut wages should show in the NY database. NY will be checking earnings July 2011-June 2012. NY has a waiting week. Therefore, you will be paid for one of the two weeks you are laid off.

Q: I filed a claim, what next?

A: For each week you wish to receive benefits, you must request payment by claiming benefits for that week. Go to How do I claim? for details. Before we can pay any benefits, you must serve an unpaid waiting period. This equals one full week of unemployment benefits. You must claim credit for your unpaid waiting week during the period that:
  • Begins on the first Sunday after you file your claim and
  • Ends the next Saturday
The waiting period extends into the next week if you:
  • Work at all during the week in which you filed your claim or
  • Do not serve a full waiting period for other reasons
Each week that you are unemployed, you must request payment if you want to receive unemployment benefits. You certify that weekly claim on Sunday, for the week ending that day.

Yes, your employer would be notified, because you are claiming against them. This would be a separate claim preceding the current claim. Talk to NY about that when you apply for the two-week layoff. Since this is a new job, I don't you should be doing this, frankly.

Just wanted to post an update on this. I also sent an email to NY unemployment with my question about which state to file and they said NY. During the first week that the business was closed, I called NY unemployment to file and was told by the person on the phone that I needed to file in CT because that's where my wages were earned. CT does not have a waiting period so I was paid for both weeks. I did ask the human resources department if I can file during weeks that I would qualify for partial unemployment and I was told yes, however in order to back file through CT, I'd have to set up a hearing, which I chose not to do since it won't be worth it. But I will file in the future for weeks that I can qualify for partial.
