My daughter's friend recently went to the unemployment office to seek benfits after being laid off from his temporary job in the new year. During the process the clerk asked the names of all his past employers and they then realized that the unemployment office has no record of him ever being employed by one of his previous employers. What can he do in this situation ? He has some of his pay stubs. Any advise would indeed be very much appreciated. Thank you. Also does this affect him getting another jobs, as he listed that company on his applications, as having worked there. Thanks again.

Have him or someone else call that company to get an employment reference. For example, call and say you want to verify employment for John Smith abd see what they say. You will have to act like you work at a place that he has applied at a job for. If they have records, they will confirm dates of employment.

It is possible that they didn't pay the unemployment taxes and that's why there is no record. Is this a small business?

If he has a W-2 from this employer for 2012, he should provide that to the UE people. By law, that employer must provide him a W-2 by the end of January.

That employer was probably late or negligent in submitting wage information. Whether or not wages were reported has nothing to do with that employer providing references. Your daughter's friend will find out soon enough about that.
