So I filled for unemployment because the store I work for is doing a remodel from top to bottom.
The remodel is going to take 8 weeks and once its all done, I can go back to work. Yay.

The company I work for had it's bb appreciate month during the time we are closed for the remodel and I got a check for 24.75 (3 hrs worth of work) but i didn't physically work.

Question 6 on the biweekly form states: Did you work or earn any money? I know to mark "YES" because i have this check. But How do i explain it on the form part a &b that I got basically got an "employee appreciation" check ?

Also I've also got taxes taken out of this paycheck i've received

Employee appreciation money is debateable. Wages is defined as work for remuneration in the UI world. While it is taxable, the fact that you didn't work for it in all honesty means that it shouldn't count against you. However, since it's less than $25 (I hope that is a gross amount you are quoting), it'll have no affect on your UI check so there is no reason to fight that battle.

Just report it, and tell them what you told us here, and don't pay it another thought. Save that paystub if it says "appreciation" in case you need it in the future.

Claim form 6a. clearly states "enter earnings before deductions here." There should be NO QUESTION about gross v. net. You always report BEFORE deductions.

If that check was for $24.75, you earned probably $30-$35 or thereabouts in order to net $24.75. CA allows you to keep the first $25. The difference between $25 and the GROSS amount will be deducted from your benefit.

REPORT THE GROSS AMOUNT.

In your case, it appears the "gross" is $24.75.

Chyvan,

I got another form from the same week. I tired to explain it like I did to you and everyone on this forum.

They said I answered question 6a and 6b wrong.

How do I answer the second claim :/

Well, we know that 6a is correct with a YES.

What is the exact wording of 6b?

Question 6: Did you work or earn any money, WHETHER YOU WERE PAID OR NOT?.......(i would mark "YES")

6a. Enter earnings before deductions here......$24.75

6b. Report employment or 'source' of earnings information below:

CHART:

Date Last Worked

Total Hours Worked

Employer Name And Address- Including Zip Code

Reason NO longer working (or write 'still working')
