I quit my job and moved to another state. I have not been able to find work in 6 months, so I applied for unemployment. They have scheduled a meeting with me via phone. Will I be eligible? A friend told me that because I moved to care for my ill sister that I'd be eligible for unemployment. Any info is greatly appreciated.

This is very state dependant. It also depends what you did when you quit.

Did you ask your employer for a leave of absense to care for the sick relative?

Did you give your employer a chance to do anything to solve this problem for you?

Did you write in your letter of resignation that you were leaving to care for a sick relative?

If any of those answers is "no," expect a problem regardless of whether state regs allow for it.

Are you still caring for the sick relative? If so, that might render you not able & available even if your separation was for "good cause."

In Massachusetts, if you leave a job voluntarily you are NOT eligible for unemployment. (the only case where you might be eligible for voluntarily leaving is if you were harassed, abused, etc at your place of work.) I believe the rule in Mass is quite similar to laws in other states.
