So this will be my second year receiving claim benefits for EDD CA. Last year I did not have to do any phone interview nor did I have any issues with certifying for benefits each week.
This year my new benefits started on 1/13 and I certified for my first two weeks yesterday (1/27) today I noticed on the EDD website that I am scheduled for an interview on 2/06. I cant fathom why, the only thing i noticed recently was this when certifying ....
"Did you look for work? You are required to make at least 3 job contacts each week. When you are presented with the Work Search Record screen later in this certification process, you must complete the entries on the screen to show your job contacts for the week you are claiming".
Has that always been the case? I always use the mobile EDD version and I never get any search record screen to complete entries, could this be why they are contacting me?
No, the last dates I worked were the first quarter that can be used for this claim which is October/November/Dec 2017 and I worked the first two weeks of January of last year. So I was able to claim two quarters.
My claim balance shows $8500 with a pay out of $427 a week. I am not receiving the max amount of benefit weeks but was able to certify for the first two weeks which are now pending due to the phone interview.
To me, it's looking like from the time you opened your claim in Jan 2018, that you didn't work at all. I think the interview is to determine if earned enough, from the date of application until the expiration date to even be able to keep your new claim.
I think they're going to invalidate it, and you're going to be disappointed. I sure hope you didn't count your chickens.
It's not just about what you made. It's about "attachment to the labor market."
Did you apply for UI in Nov 2017? If so, why did you wait until what looks like now to get your 2nd-year claim? How much did you earn from the job that fired you in Jan 2018? Did the separation get adjudicated?
No, I applied for UI in Jan 13 2018 and it ended Jan 13, 2019.
Is it possible to use independent contract work and claim it for this year if the reason they are interviewing me is because I did not show income for the period of January 13 2018 to January 13 2019? I have some earnings from substitute teaching as well as uber that I had worked in 2018. If it exceeds $1300 will I be able to claim?
You're making it worse when you say Uber. The substitute teaching raises issues that you're on a break or quit. It's not just about $1,300. It's about the right kind of employment to get the $1,300 and WHY you aren't still doing that job.
That's why I asked about Christmas help. I was hoping you had a clean layoff from a retail store.
Next time, get HELP.
Sounds to me that if you had applied for UI in Nov 2017, you'd have gotten a claim. Then you could have gotten a 2nd year claim for the Jan firing in Nov, 2018.
Instead, it's looking like you waited, and applied after you were fired. You say it was TWO jobs, but UI works on the LAST job. So if you don't apply when it makes sense after EVERY job loss, then you waste it, and you can't get it back.
I have a sick feeling you botched things up, and don't have a clue that had you done things differently you'd have gotten that new claim.
I got fired in Jan 2018, i couldnt file UI until Jan 2018. My claim was filed in Jan 2018 and ended in Jan 2019. The sub teaching was temporary work. The last job was the one in Jan 2018 which i got fired. My work since consisted of this sub teaching and Uber. The only job loss was the one on Jan 2018. Everything else was temp work.
Why did they open my claim again and let me certify if there are issues? Wouldnt I have just been denied from the get go?

Not always. Some people don't say things like they should, and it can take awhile for EDD to figure things out.
This interview is one way to do that.
