You gotta be more proactive in this market. Simply replying to ads isn't going to be effective. You need to call into a company and find out who's in charge of hiring. It's really that easy too. Just call the main line and ask the operator/receptionist "can you tell me who's in charge of hiring?" or "can you tell me who's in charge of ____ department?" 9 times out of 10 she will tell you.

Your husband and I are in the same boat! I was laid off in September too. Unfortunately, because of the usual "because of the economy" non-sense, it does not look like we will find any work until after the new years holiday. Even the electronics stores that were looking for seasonal workers are not hiring. But let's hope 2009 will be a little brighter, it may not be a big miracle, but a little glimmer of hope will do.

Agreed. An interview at Baylor Medical that I had arranged to have just after Thanksgiving was postponed "because of the economy" (yes, even in Texas! ). They say they will rearrange the interview after New Year's, but we'll just wait and see.
