I thought I had a pretty good handle on the way everything worked...I have been claiming like I was supposed to and have reached Tier 2 recently, with at LEAST half of the benefit amount left in that tier. My benefit date is 9/19/10. When I went to claim this morning like usual, it said this:

The benefit year on your unemployment claim dated 09-19-2010 has expired.
No unemployment benefits are available to you at this time.

Is this normal? What do I do? Do I just select the "open a new claim or re-open an existing claim" option? I would appreciate your help!

Ok, I read a few other posts pertaining to this so I will NOT be doing anything online....I realize now that you have to call about this. But if someone would clarify and let me know what to expect, I would totally appreciate it.

Hi Maverick,

Not sure which state you're in but in California we're required to call EDD at the BYE {benefit year end} which is apparently where you are now.

You're correct about not doing this online .... it will confuse the system and delay your payments. Call tomorrow. They'll ask a few questions to confirm you're still looking for work and then they will reopen your claim. You'll continue from where you were on Tier 2.

It's a very easy process that only takes a couple of minutes.

As Rapture stated, this is totally normal. All states require re-certification of the existing claim or issuance of a new claim after 12 months of claiming benefits. Doing this online always backfires, even though it sure "looks like" it's an option on the (NJ) UI website. A claimant must call, answer a few questions, and the determination of continuing on the old claim or starting a new claim is made right there.

When claiming online in NJ after your BYE date, the following screen appears:

Quote:
New Jersey Internet Application for
Continued Weekly Unemployment Benefits

Your certification cannot be completed online as your benefit year has expired.
Please call the Reemployment Call Center at (856) 507-2340, (732) 761-2020 or (201) 601-4100.
Press "2" to speak to an agent to see if you qualify for a new claim.

For more information, please refer to the following link:
Department of Labor and Workforce Development | Frequently Asked Questions
This means you should run, not walk to the phone and get ready for the possibility that you won't be able to get through on the first day you try to call. Keep hitting that redial button!
