Could there be any way I could qualify for unemployment if:

- I "technically" voluntarily left a job...but the reason I quit was due to a change in work arrangements/possibly lay off (basically a long story and apparently one that might still qualify me for unemployment...another in my same situation was able to get it)
- The last time I worked in said job was November 2008
- The job was in another state, and no longer a state that I'm a resident in (was in FL, I now live in CA)

If I'm being an idiot for asking this, just tell me. I'm merely curious... and also frightened how I cannot seem to even get an interview for any job (though I know I'm preaching to the choir).

I've tried searching on my own, and I'm not finding any info.

You must file your unemployment claim in the state where you worked. Go to the Florida unemployment website (link provided below) and download the "most frequently asked questions" document available there. You should find all the answers to your questions in that document.

I don't know if you'll be able to even collect unemployment from 2008. It might be too far back, but I would try anyway.

Post Unemplomenment

I work as a substitute teacher in NJ. Some months work is good and holiday months are bad. This month for the last week of Oct. I made 150.00 and the first week of Nov. I have made 50.00. I have a BA, am very well liked by everyone in the District. Having said that, I can't live on slow down to to pay my bills. Can I collect partial unemploment from my job?
Second question: why does unemploment have to call my job? And could calling effect badly on my job?
I work in a job that is attitude sensitive and I don't want to lose this job.

Absolutely irrelevant to a discussion of whether you can get partial unemployment.

Maybe. Any time there is a reduction in hours, that would be a legit reason to be eligible. However, you have to use NJ's benefit calculator, get out your pay stubs from the past 18 months, and any week that you earn less than your partial UI amount, you'd receive the difference as a benefit. If you don't want to do the math, you can apply and let the state figure it out.

To find out the reason you might be eligible. They aren't going to just take your word for it. Let's say your hours were reduced, but after calling the employer, they find out it was because you asked to not be scheduled. That situation would be a big problem because it's very different than the employer just not having enough work for you.

Yes, it could hurt you. There is nothing to stop the employer from not scheduling you ever again. They might not even tell you, "you're fired." They just never have you come back, and there have been people on here that swear they are still an employee someplace even though they haven't been scheduled in months.

For UI purposes, any week you earn less than you'd get on unemployment = discharged/laid off.

At a minimum, you can precalculate your benefit amount yourself before applying. If you only get $60/wk, you might decide applying is not worth possibly making them mad over such a small incremental amount you might receive.

You will have extra hurdles b/c you are substitute teacher. NJ has strict rules on UE benefits for people w/teaching contracts. Generally, if you have a contract for this school year, you are not considered unemployed.

Whether or not NJ will grant a new claim paying partial benefits to a substitute teacher under contract when you earn less than you did the previous contract term is not an issue we have encountered on this board. I suspect not because as a substitute you are not guaranteed any hours at all.

Further, most school districts routinely object to ue benefits. Employers are always queried when an employee applies for unemployment benefits. School districts routinely fight these benefits.

If you do proceed with an application, please let us know the result. Teachers/educators generally have a much higher bar than the average employee whose hours are cut.
