I realize that, if I was already collecting unemployment checks before I started working one of those many temp jobs for the U.S. Census Bureau, that I could resume getting the checks once the job ends.

My question is: what if I quit my current part-time job (which I've held well over a year), and then took the Census job, would I then be eligible for unemployment benefits?

Put another way, if I am not eligible for unemployment now, but I do have a wage history to base benefits on, and then I work the Census Bureau temp job, will I be able to start collecting benefits after the Census Bureau job ends?

I've tried asking our state Employment Dept. and gotten nowhere, they're only geared to decide claims once they've been made. But this affects whether I'd take the census job or not!

In itself, the census jobs don't make you eligible. However, the money you make on them does count toward your benefit. If you left a previous job for a good (benefits-worthy) reason, then you can file after the census job ends, and could face a lower level of dispute over whether your departure from that previous job was a benefits-worthy departure.

Not without a hassle. Temp service will report this as a quit/job refusal. You need a good reason not to have taken another assignment identical to the one you had.
