I thank God that the law has been changed so that I only have to pay 35% of the cost of my COBRA benefits. From what I understand, the remaining 65% is paid by the employer who in turn receives a tax write off for an equal amount. Someone please correct this info if I am wrong about the details. I know that there is some gov't assistance to the employer for the COBRA subsidy, but could be wrong on the details.
What other assistance provisions are in place for employers when laying someone off? I have always heard that when a company lays someone off, it increases the the cost of their unemployment insurance payments. Has the cost of laying an employee off been neutralized or subsidized, thereby giving no incentive for a company to keep an employee in place? (costs and benefits to keep VS layoff staff, not the cost of an ongoing salary VS no salary)
