First I want to thank "wannabe" for all the great to the point info of the refile, reinstatment of extended benefits process. Here is my experience
I hope this helps someone else.

1.3/20/10 original unemployment claim ended as one year time frame had expired.

2.This was exactly at the end of the of the week 5 of the 13 week Tier 2 extension.

3. Refiled for a new claim via e-file on the EDD web site on 3-21-10.

4. Sent in continued benefits claim form that came with previous check on 3-27-10 per the form directions.

5. Received a check for 1st week ending 3-20-10 but not 2nd week ending 3-27-10.

6. Six days after e-file of new claim paperwork came stating claim invalid per section 1277 (See page 10 item 9 in Calif. EDD benefit guide).

7. Called 916-683-4400 spoke directly to call center employee. Employee referred me to Los Angeles call center 213-744-2137. Employee answered put me directly on hold. I patiently waited 10 minutes. Explained situation NICELY!!! was immediately transferred to employee that verified my paper work, Released payment for week ending 3-27-10 and stated I had 8 weeks remaining on tier 2.

8. If you e-file everything comes out of L.A. so call 213-744-2137 first.

9. If Congress does not push back the deadlines for unemployement extensions past the end of your 8th week you will not move to tier 3. This is true for any tier your on currently.

10. However you should be eligible for the Fed-Ed 20 week final extension after you exhaust all other benefits.

11. Remember don't be a jerk on the phone to anyone you talk with, no matter how frustrated or upset you might be knowing you need money to pay the rent. These people can make it more difficult if you're a jerk.

12. You will not be informed about this process when you receive your Tier 2 week five check. You need to initiated this process on your own it is not done automatically for you.

Total actual time spent on above process maybe 30 minutes.

You could try this process over the phone but I found it less stressful not having to verbally answer all the questions for the new claim, both the employee and myself knowing it will be invalid and they will reinstate remaining Tier 2 benefits.

Good luck with the job hunting. Pray Congress will show us unemployed as much love as they do to people who have never paid taxes or spilled any blood for this country.

Question questions re: tiers

Glad I found your post -
Just wondered about a few things. My claim initiated 5/09, I received an extension, although I don't know how long it was for, but after receiving two weeks payment, and 3 weeks after returning my claim form I received a notice stating they need information on my last employer?
I went to EDD website and completed a NEW unemployment form per the websites confusing directions. I am wondering now what? One of my other unemployed friends received total of 99 weeks unemployment, and I was wondering if I have worked as long and earned about the same won't my unemployment benefits be extended too? Or is this new claim I submitted a totally different thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
