Doomsday 2012 will at least be a sales bonanza for many businesses. It will be bigger than New Years with parties at least. It may even overshadow Christmas. You'll get about half the voers feeling despondant from the election outcome either way so they'll need a party or maybe want the world to end.
What's better, ending it quick on December 21, 2012 or continuing its slow long steady decline?
