The first on record account of a fatal encounter with a UFO and a U.S. Army pilot occurred on Jan. 8. 1948 over Franklin, Ky.

It was on this day that 25-year-old National Guard jet fighter pilot Capt. Thomas Mantell Jr.’s plane exploded, instantly killing him, as he was pursuing a “mysterious flaming red cone trailing a gaseous green mist,” seen by thousands, according to an initial article by the Associated Press.

Lieutenant Felix Moncla also died pursuing a UFO near Lake Superior in 1953. His RIO Lt Robert Wilson also died. They were flying an F-89.

Encountering...

He's not the only pilot to have UFO "issues". I remember one pilot in Australia disappeared entirely.

But UFOs are kook stuff; only crazies and liars see them.
