New Orleans does have the setting for many ghosts and unexplained things. Voodoo alone is a secretive thing and that brings out the imagination in people. Add slavery and all its horribleness to that and there are bound to be some very unhappy spirits floating about. I visited in 1979 and thought it was very European but didn't do more than just walking around some. It didn't seem any weirder than London or any old European city to me. But I'd like to go to some of the cemeteries and see what goes on or get a guided tour.

My family is originally from New Orleans - no unusual experiences from the vibe of the city but a few tales about rather unusuals experiences in our old house, which could happen anywhere in the country. Most of the so-called "negative" voodoo reputation is now geared towards tourists. Voodoo basically is a combination of old religious beliefs from the African slaves and Christianity.

i had an unusual experience there pre flood---took the voodoo tour in a carraige---slowed down in front of a shop that had a voodo theme not too far from preservation hall---an elderly gentleman waved and called out to me and my family---stated---get off here--i have something for you---i turned away as the horse and carraige began moving again---got off much later blocks away near an eatery called petunia's--went inside and sat near door with my back to the door----door opened---and i hear behind me --i need to speak to you---turned around--old man from store with wooden cane with many intricate designs and faces, smiling at me and motioning me to join him--daughter and hubby spooked made the fastest exit ever---too shaken after seeing the cane and the old man so far away from the original sighting-----dtr looked back as we were leaving and could not see him anymore--the cafe was one room and small with only one visible door----a mystery to this day
