Two things a marionette puppet of the wolf in a story on tv. I still get that to pop in my head from time to time and that was in the mid sixties. The next is a older paintings of clowns in sitting poses with their eyes looking at you. Just creepy.
my cousin had one of those vintage cabbage patch dolls with the cloth faces. we didn't like it because we thought it was fake. lol. anyway, that doll was creepy as hell. it seemed like her eyes would follow us wherever we went in the room. we were actually scared to be in the same room with it. my cousin ended up throwing it in the trash.
I have always thought dolls to be creepy. As an only child I did let my imagination go wild with stuffed animals, GI Joes, and the like. But no, I was never afraid they would "come to life".
After hearing stories about the cabbage patch dolls coming to life back in the 80s and seeing the movie "Child's Play", I got rid of all my dolls as a kid. Actually my mother got rid of my dolls. I remember staring out the front window at one of my dolls sitting on top of our garbage can looking as if she was staring right back at me and her eyes turning red. I was thinking, I'm glad this evil doll is out of my life.
Like a lot of toys from the 80s, if we only knew how much they would eventually become worth. To this day my mom still kicks herself in the behind on occasion for getting rid of my GI Joe and Star Wars figures and sets. Even out of the box they became worth a small fortune.
As a kid, ALL my stuff animals and dolls were alive. They were all my friends.
Cat
All of my dolls and stuffed animals were my friends. They had names and personalities. Kathy was smart, Linda was pretty, Dobbin the horse was a bit rebellious and the nondescript brown dog slept with me. I felt sorry for him.
“Real isn't how you are made, said the Skin Horse. It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."
I had a childhood friend whose mom collected those vintage dolls which look much more creepy to me. Something never set well with me and I can't recall the 'psych' term but it has to do with the more anthropomorphic the 'doll' representation the creepier they seem.
Then I saw Twilight Zone "Talking Tina" and it further cemented my feelings of dislike.
What's funny here is all the 80's movie and toy references.. As great as it was, growing up in the 80's certainly had more than it's fair share of silly & strange creepiness lol. Gotta love it
