This is a very interesting study by a Dr B G Colvin that was essentially a comparison study of the wave forms of "paranormal" noises (Knocking and rapping sounds recorded during alleged poltergeist investigations) vs normal noises.

The findings suggested "paranormal" sounds are actually a different kind of sound than normal and their specific wave forms could not be reproduced through normal means. Rather than a normal sharply spiking wave form with a physical sound, "paranormal" noise wave forms build up before the wave peaks, rather like an earthquake.

Very interesting stuff...

Here's the "Reader's Digest Version" from the report if you aren't into reading scientific reports :

"Perhaps the most significant finding in
this study is that the generally
recognised description of the rap-like
sounds often reported at poltergeist
investigations are not actually raps at
all. A rap is normally associated with
sound produced when one solid object
strikes another. Under these
circumstances, the amplitude of the
sound is immediately at its maximum,
corresponding to maximum energy
transfer and therefore maximum
vibration at the moment of impact.
The unexplained rapping effects
described in this study are clearly
different to this and appear to involve
the relatively slow build-up of a stress
within a material, culminating in an
audible sound when the level of stress
reaches a specific magnitude."

I am sure there is a perfectly rational and logical explanation for this finding.

How about some logical deductive reasoning instead? This is the scientific method in action here, not just "spooky stories" retold 'round the campfire...

What? You mean you were serious?

Scientific method indeed. If there is evidence then why do all these cash prizes remain unclaimed.... List of prizes for evidence of the paranormal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ghosts stories are fun and all, but they are only figments of people's imaginations.

Challenge the material I presented, don't change the suject. This is a real published scientific study. Remember, this isn't jumping to far as to claim the disembodied souls of the dead are roaming the earth, just that there is something unusual about how these sounds are produced.

Why do the wave forms from alleged poltergeist recordings differ from the wave forms of normal knocking sounds? If the phenomenon is all in people's imaginations, how do the sounds get recorded in the first place, and why are they different from normal sounds? If they were hoaxed, how would it be done to match the study results ?

Real science? Not hardly. Pseudo science at best....It was published in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research.

Society for Psychical Research - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's hardly a oufit run out of someone's parent's basement...

Anyway this proves my frustration with the suject. Here is a well researched, well documented and readly available report from a qualified scientist that discovers and clearly documents an odd phenomenon, is readily verifiable yet is still shunned JUST because of the subject matter.

The scientific community say there is no evidence, but that is because nobody's looking at the evidence.

If one is so convinced, take the evidence to James Randi. You can win a million dollars.

I have the same problem when discussing evidence/proofs of the spiritual with most atheists. It just gets dismissed.

Come to think of it rarely (if at all) on CD does anyone ever say "well that's interesting, tell me more". Nope, they just attempt to explain it away (as we see in this thread). Must be a requiste to join the skeptic club.
