Hello,

There are many books describing ancient technology and ancient high tech civlizations. There have even been ancient technical devices found. My question is:

1. How does technology get lost?

2. What would cause an ancient civilization to suddenly become primitive?

Thanks

1. Lack of documentation. If you've ever worked in IT, you can relate to that statement. You fix a problem, but you didn't write anything down. Next time it happens, you can't remember how you fixed it and no one else can follow your work.

2. Reality TV.

1. The so-called "Nephilim" were supposedly chased to this solar system, and had to hide here. They violated the real "Prime Directive" and tampered with life here. All the traditions about "War in Heaven" refer to this conflict. Think of the three 'gods' in Superman 2. They seemed impressive to the earthlings, but definitely did not have all the techs of their home planet. Much of sci-fi and superhero comics are just ancient astronaut/alien theory packaged into an entertaining, fictionalized format. It dates back well before Sitchen and von Daniken. Also there was supposedly a flood that wiped out the Nephilim/Annunaki antediluvian civilization and they left this rock or went underground. The rest started "priesthood" orders to preserve the secrets of civilization, but these quickly devolved into Masonry and other secret societies that do more to keep people from knowledge than preserve it.

2. What caused the dark ages after the zenith of the Roman and Greek civilizations? Greedy politicians, an uneducated lower class that outgrew the ones with the secrets, and the purposeful destruction of "pagan" schools and libraries. Superstition abounds, as does totalitarian statecraft. Just apply the same model to Atlantis or whatever high civilization. Human hubris is destructive.

The questions should be reversed, after a civilization sinks back to into barbarism technology gets lost. Only caveat to that would be a civilization gets totally wiped off the face of the Earth because of a natural disaster....

Suggested reading on civilizations that fit the above (sinks back into barbarism):

~ Maya

~ Khemer

~ Minoans

How many other civilizations have been erased from planet Earth because of plate tectonics we'll never know...

To look at how a civilization starts into decline read up on the United States, matches Roman history doesn't it?

You know several pretty good examples in observable history. Greeks. Roman culture, followed by the Dark Ages and Renaissance.
Civilizations go in cycles. The great cycle is 12 000 years. Earth flips (Janibekov effect), magnetic field changes to opposite, poles shift. This results in cataclysmic changes on the Earth crust and, sometimes, almost complete wipe out of humanity.
Besides, what you asking is question for now, not question for the past. You asking from a standpoint of a technological civilization person, and what if there were ones, that achieved highest summits of development, not being technological? What are you going to dig out then? Baalbek monoliths weighing 1000 metric tons and no one knows how in the world moved?

The cataclysm that wiped out Atlantis and Mu was also the one that destroyed life on Mars. The Annunaki came back after the flood to continue their rule of the earth people.

Atlantis, Mu, Lemuria, the Martians and Anunaki are great subjects for comic books and faux-history channel mocu-mentries but it's best to face the facts: They just weren't real.

If there were high tech ancient civilizations (Which I think is a possiblity at least) they would be something else entirely, been tens of thousands of years old and have since vanished without a trace.

As for how a technological civilzation can destroy itself, just watch "The Road Warrior". If you build your civilization on a unstable foundation (in our case, oil) it's very easy to collapse it... and only a very small percentage of all people alive actually know how to make and maintain all the technological do-dads we have today. If the oil suddenly stopped flowing today, there would be virtually nothing left of our civilization in another century.

How many visible remnants are left of Nazi Germany? And that happened less than 100 years ago.

this.

many interesting and well acclaimed books have been written on the subject of the collapse of civilizations. i would suggest the following books to those interested in reading up:

1) Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed: Revised Edition: Jared Diamond: 9780143117001: Amazon.com: Books

2) The Collapse of Complex Societies (New Studies in Archaeology): Joseph A. Tainter: 9780521386739: Amazon.com: Books

3) Amazon.com: Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update (9781931498586): Donella H. Meadows, Jorgen Randers, Dennis L. Meadows: Books

the author of the second book, joseph tainter, gave a very interesting lecture on the matter, which you can view on youtube. divided into 7 parts total, which include a q+a session at the end. the first part:
