My father was in the Air Force as a pilot in the 50s and 60s, then a commercial pilot for another 20 years after. He neither received any military intructions on UFOs, nor ran into airforce pilots that had any experience with UFOs. Nor has he had any UFO encounters as a commercial pilot, nor ran into any pilots that had UFO encounters. When I say "UFOs" of course I mean something unidentified that is so unusual as to warrant a passing interest.

And of course ... if they DID see anything ... "They didn't see anything", else, they're no longer pilots.

No special instructions ever given, during my era. Most of us viewed Keyhoe's 1958 book as either nonsense or very creative writing. Although he claimed we were given special instructions when encountering UFO's I never received any and do not recall meeting any pilot who did. Maybe that was something for the academy boys and something those of us, that came from the aviation cadet program were not privy to.

Unusual sightings were common but were nearly always the planet Venus seen in the day time. First time you see it, While you are in a steep, high speed climb, it can be quite unsettling. More than one pilot tried to shoot it down.

Another phenomenon experienced at high altitudes was seeing "Foo-Fighters" or phantom fighters. A strange effect at high altitude when Cosmic Radiation (Gamma Rays) unhampered by the atmosphere, stimulate the optic nerve and you see bright fast moving lights.

Or something from the skunkworks, like an early version of the SR-71?

Most UFO sightings are celestial objects or atmospheric phenomena; the remainder are likely just advanced aircraft.
