We bought the home a year ago on October 1st. We had some work to do on the house and we didn't want to move in over the holidays - so we moved in right before Easter - early March.
Yet you said the sound didn't start until summer. That's why I think it's to do with something (construction material) expanding during the heat of the day and contracting in the wee hours of the night when it cools down. That's a pretty common happening - many houses creak, pop, and even bang due to temperature changes.
When I moved into my apt. a few years ago, the first time I turned on the heat it sounded like a low whirring and then - BANG! And every time it kicks on it sounds like that. Now it doesn't bother me but that first winter it woke me up several times. So, it could be something in your house kicking on.
I think I know the kind of sound you're referring to -- though I've never heard it myself -- it's like someone hitting a furnace hard with a the end of a baton, creating a loud, slighting reverberating metal drum sound. And if that's what it sounds like, it does seem to be some kind of mass of energy doing this. Does it seem to resonate from the basement, if you have one, or from the middle of the house?
