When I have bad dreams, more often then not they take place in the house where I grew up (haven't lived there in 15 years), they generally involve my older sister sleeping with my ex-husband or one of my former boyfriends. The men always tell me they prefer her and are unapologetic about it and she is smug. I'm devastated but no one minds. My grandmother or my father, both of whom are deceased, are present but they never speak to me or look at me and they aren't doing anything scary or meaningful. I know it sounds silly, but these dreams are really starting to bother me because they happen so frequently.

My sister is happily married and doesn't even live in the same state and we are not particularly close. I see her maybe twice a year and I don't understand why I'm having these negative dreams about her after so many years or what they mean.

When I was a teenager, the guys actually did prefer my sister because she was very beautiful and I'm just pretty. She married quite well and has two amazing boys. She is highly critical of me, doesn't really respect me and downs my family and my choices. I am happily re-married, have a good career that I sort of fell into although I'm not really doing what I love, and a daughter that recently graduated with honors from college. I mention these things because I have no real reason to be despondent and insecure and yet I keep having these stupid dreams that leave me depressed and feeling totally inadequate and insecure.

Just sharing and venting because maybe someone has experienced something similar.

The dreams are about your self-worth and insecurities derived from the actions of others.
Keep in mind that the characters in our dreams are usually not the character themselves, but a reflection of ourselves, how we see others seeing us, and/or the qualities in the character that we are focused upon- it may be what we envy, desire, or dislike- which can cross over to what is within ourselves, back to that reflection.

Your dreams are attempting to formulate this is a compact package so that you can -know- this is what is going on with your emotions and subconscious.
Once you accept this concept for what it is (does not mean accept that is just part of life), and make the mental & emotional adjustments, the dreams will stop.

I really appreciate your in-depth and intelligent response. It does give me something to think about. Thank you.

It is hard to have had a sister who looks down on you, and this can affect you for the rest of your life, or you can convince yourself that her opinion doesn't matter, and go on with your life as you see fit. I have an older sister who is jealous of me, but I have learned that is her problem, not mine. When I start obsessing about it, I just say , not my problem, go with god. Sometimes I have to say it over and over, but sooner or later, I learn to do what I think best, and what I think she is thinking does not matter. Sounds convoluted, I know, but think about it, and it may make sense.
