On the night of April 10, 2001, Robert William Fisher murdered his wife Mary and their two children, Brittney and Bobby, in their home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He then drove to an ATM machine in Mary's car where he withdrew $280. Afterwards, Fisher disconnected a gas line in the house and lit a candle to create an explosion, which successfully happened the next morning about 11 hours after the killings. This gave him 10 hours of time to escape law enforcement, which he did.

The last trace of Robert William Fisher was found on April 20, 2001, when Mary's car and the family dog (alive) were found in Tonto National Forest. Fisher was familiar with this area and the many nearby caves and had visited with a friend shortly before the murders. Police searched the area but didn't find Fisher. A couple reported seeing him in the nearby Fort Apache Indian Reservation between the day of the killings and when Mary's car was found.

Robert William Fisher was described as a control freak with his wife and children, and as being afraid of becoming too close to friends and family out of the fear of losing them. Fisher's parents divorced when he was a teenager, which emotionally devastated him, and made him intensely afraid of losing people. Fisher blamed the divorce of his parents for his personality flaws. Fisher had a history of bizarre behavior and was somewhat abusive, such as an incident when he pushed his children off of a boat in an attempt to teach them how to swim. He had been a member of the Navy and was more than familiar with outdoor survival. He had at least one affair during the marriage and was afraid of Mary finding out about it.

Mary had been planning on divorcing Robert in the weeks prior to the murders, and it is believed that the resemblance between his failing marriage and the failed marriage of his parents made Fisher decide to murder her and the children. With Brittney and Bobby being close to his age when his parents divorced, Fisher may have believed that they would be better off dead than to experience the effects of divorce that he had experienced.

Some believe that he is alive under a false name, and others believe that he either committed suicide or died from the elements in the woods after leaving the car. This case is similar to the case of William Bradford Bishop murdering his family in 1976, Bishop has also never been found. The FBI believes that Fisher may be living in New Mexico or Florida.

Is Robert William Fisher still alive?

I am kind of curious what happens when we have a control freak like Fisher that comes in contact with our indigenous people? Many of our Indian reservations are not part of the US and they have their own laws and law enforcement. Some of our worse criminals could turn to those reservations for refuge but I doubt they would be welcomed with open arms. Some of our Native American tribes might work with US law enforcement and some will not. I just presume there are many interesting stories to be told.

Very, very unlikely. Esp for a man like this. These reservations sadly aready have serious issues ranging from poverty to drugs. An outsider arriving bringing thier own issues will not be welcomed. And they shouldnt.

Default Looks close!

I saw the reconstruction of a body found in the woods in U.S. somewhere that looked real close to him. He came to mind immediately! If I can find I will share.

Back in the day, it was so easy to go across state lines and disappear forever, assume a new identity without many questions asked.

Nowadays, it’s very, very difficult to do so.

The military started DNA banking everyone, not sure if this happened before or after this guy left the Navy?

There are cameras everywhere nowadays, and it also draws attention if you have nothing in your background after a certain point. Someone would surely get suspicious if you tried to do a background check on a guy and it stopped at 2001 with nothing else preceding it, like utility records, drivers license, banking information, employment, etc.

Sure, it’s possible he’s alive and hiding under a new name, but it’s much more likely he died in Tonto right after his disappearance.
