I never understood why Bush took TWO YEARS to retaliate, and then, to the "wrong" group of people. He had me brainwashed; I thought, "YAY, USA!" like most everyone did, and of course his approval ratings soared, but I always thought, "Doesn't make sense; why aren't we going after the terrorists?"
Or am I confusing two separate events, and the now-going-on-11-Year-War in Afghanistan was meant to be about something else? I am not a politically minded person; please forgive my ignorance.
The problem I have with conspiracy theories of this magnitude is the shear amount of work in keeping the deeds secret. Governments have a horrible time keeping anything secret this long.
The CIA did a pretty good job with the phoney story in the early 1970s when they were trying to actually raise a sunken Soviet submarine. Even Howard Hughes was involved with this coverup.

i don't understand how someone could argue that "the government could never ever plan something this elaborate with no word of it ever getting out" and then have no problem believing that a bunch of cave dwelling illiterate afghanis could plan and execute something of this complexity and magnitude.

The workings of getting something done in secret when there needs to be so many people involved is compartmentalization. It's a big pyramid and only those on the top level know the truth. Everyone else is just following orders. Orders are often benign in appearance as a standalone order.

Those who planned 9/11 were not a bunch of "cave dwelling illiterate Afghanis." Without bin Ladens's money (he comes from a very wealthy family), it probably wouldn't have even been possible and most hijackers were Saudi anyway (a very rich country). A lot of planing went into 9/11. The hijackers who flew the planes even came to the US and attended flight school in Florida... not only do you have to be literate to do that, but you have to have money, either your own or donated.
Our intelligence missed this because we weren't looking for it, simply enough. Only SINCE 9/11 have we as a country become so obsessed with terrorism. The FBI and CIA barely cared about terror threats, or bin Laden himself, until it was too late. They didn't even collaborate on anti-terrorism.

Then why did Bill Clinton launch a cruise missile attack on Bin Laden?
