I'm wondering what would have led them to link the two - correct me if I'm wrong, but even at this time they were aware of what constituted a meteorite. The "gelatinous... substance" aside, this must have been an exceptional meteor/fireball but I have found no record of it. Or perhaps it's a complete fabrication. (Source is a London, Ontario newspaper.)
