You're in the wrong forum if you're asking that question!

And why would it be that hard to believe? You think we are the only life forms in the entire universe?

We're the only life forms flying military jets over St Louis.

Let's see...
  1. the jets flew out of visual range,
  2. an obstacle came between the jets and the observers,
  3. haze,
  4. clouds,
  5. heck, maybe they even turned their lights off.
The observed direction of flight indicates the port lights (red lights) would be visible. The observation that the lights were "pink" indicates clouds and/or haze.

I've seen this particular type of "sighting" at least two dozen times. On one occasion, it was several helicopters flying "lights-out" and suddenly they turned their lights on.

A friend once told me a great UFO encounter story. He was driving on I-16 in southeast Georgia,a stretch of road that is not heavily traveled and goes through some rural farmland areas. It's not unusual to find yourself alone on the road with no other cars in sight.

It was night time, and out of nowhere, three very bright lights came down out of the sky and were shining right in his rear window, so close it looked like they were resting on his car trunk. He tried speeding up and slowing down, but no change. After a minute or so of "what the hell is that?" and not being able to get away, the lights suddenly moved straight up, disappearing vertically. No sign of them again.

Weird? I think so.

Because alien life intelligent/advanced enough have conquered the vast distances of nothingness to get here wouldn't A) follow earthly aviation lighting regulations, and B) leave their lights on in the first place.

I live near two bases and have seen helicopters flying in formation like this. Sometimes theyll fly behind a could thats not visible due to weird lighting at night. This gives it the illusion to the ground viewer that they simply disappeared.

My response was to someone who didn't believe in UFO's period and making fun of the poster.

That assertion is based upon unprovable assumptions.

IF (and it is a HUUUUGE IF) intelligent alien life exists, there is no reason to assume they think like we do. Lights on such craft might have nothing to do with safety or illumination. It could be exhaust. It could be the side-effect of the technology. It could have a religious significance. It could be alien thugs pimpin up their rides. We simply have absolutely no way of knowing how an advanced civilization might think or what all the functions of their technology might be.

But we have no solid evidence there are aliens at all. It's just as plausible that they are humans time-traveling from the 26th-and-a-half century. Or John Boehner's tanning beds finally gained sentience and have escaped their bonds. It's all just speculation.

Any flying object you cannot identify is by definition an Unidentified Flying Object, and there are hundreds of such sightings across the globe every year. The overwhelming majority are explainable as known aircraft, natural phenomena, or hoaxes. But that small percentage for which there is no good explanation will definitely keep you up at night.

I would not make any assumptions about what those lights were. They were only lights at distance. Unless you clearly see a structured craft that does not conform to any conventional or known aircraft in good light at close enough distance or performing maneuvers outside the envelope of what's possible for known aircraft there is no good reason to assume it's not one of ours.
