It was common for strangers to hand out notes to other strangers in Berkeley? o.0 I grew up in Berkeley and visited often after moving away, and that never happened to me once.
I haven't had any luck with the kind of telepathy you're talking about, but I have had luck with what they call psychometery, where you hold an object someone wears regularly, or even a cotton ball they've held for a few minutes, and "read" information from that. I didn't get spectacular results--no predictions or anything, but in one instance, I described (out of nowhere, without the other person telling me anything) an important relationship she'd been in that broke up, and why it broke up, and with another person, I was able to describe the exterior of her house. These were the things that spontaneously came to me (it was an exercise as part of a psychic skills workshop), rather than being responses to questions.
So we all have some kind of ability in that realm, but our culture doesn't support discovering and developing those skills.
The 70 was a strange but wonderful era. People tried all kinds of ways to meet each other. One day I had a man walking beside me on the sidewalk who then began talking to me. Or they would begin talking to me in a bookstore, not to mention cafes.
I had a friend who taught me to do psychic readings, and she went to Heartsong which was a place where you learned to give psychic readings, I went there for a while. I believe they closed before I moved away or right after.
...Has anyone here gone to a medium and actually received real information that no one would know about except you and that loved one that the medium was supposedly contacting?
Well, I almost went to see an almost psychic.
A long time ago I was at a crossroads in my life and faced with making an important decision. Although I had personally experienced two paranormal events, I was skeptical of all psychics and ridiculed them whenever the subject came up in conversation with friends.
Nevertheless, I was desperate, and my wife encouraged me to see Peter Hurkos. When I made the appointment, I was told (I thought) to bring $15 cash. I drove to Studio City, CA, and called his secretary, as directed, to let her know I was 15 minutes away. She then asked me if I had the $50 cash, and I said, "Never mind".

That's actually normal in the Bay Area. Maybe not so much now, with so many transplants from around the US and around the world moving in, but it's always been a friendly place, where people would strike up conversations with strangers, simply being neighborly. But it sounds like your experience was on a whole other level.
I think if people would try a couple of workshops like you mention, they'd be surprised at their own abilities. But I also think you may be more gifted in that area than you realize.
I don't know how gifted I am. I really stopped paying attention to it.
