Typical atheistic western tourists have no respect for local customs and the sacredness of certain geographical features, especially in so-called third world countries where westerners believe they have the right to stomp upon as though it were some great eco-playground.

Quote:
The state’s Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said the quake was a result of the action of Western tourists who had stripped naked near Mount Kinabalu’s summit last month, The Straits Times reports.
Mount Kinabalu is sacred to the local Kadazan Dusun tribal group, who consider it a resting place for departed spirits.
Today he said the tragedy was a “confirmation” of the consequences of the actions of the 10 Europeans who he said had been disrespectful to local customs.

Ahem, the same could be said for tourists from anywhere in the world visiting any other country in the world (disrespectful to local customs)...

There will always be some local tribe/sect/religious order that will take offense with their arcane views...

If ten naked tourists can bring mayhem to a country, that country should definitely consider more restrictive visas.

I am not sure if I believe the tourists are to blame for the quake, but I do think it was wrong of them to travel to the home of others, and show that kind of disrespect.

I wouldn't call their "views" "arcane". A few years ago there were pictures floating around the Internet of people urinating on war memorials. War memorials are not the product of any religious belief, but many still consider such monuments to be sacred. Were the people who were outraged by the fact that somebody would urinate on a war memorial reacting because they have "arcane views"? Of course not.

Great eco-playground. I like that. While my western mind does not blame the quakes on this behavior, I agree western visitors should respect local customs. I've been embarrassed more than once by fellow travelers acting while on vacation/holiday as if a location was a theme park rather than a home to the locals.

There was a fire and brimstone, TV preacher who blamed California's earthquakes on the porn industry. Sounds a bit far-fetched. I suppose it's possible if they made a bunch of movies at the same time. All of that shaking could trigger some type of event.

Malaysia earthquake at Mount Kinabalu live updates
It seems everyone on Malaysia got a strange email the night before the earthquake from the god of Mt Kinabalu:

"Dear citizens of Malaysia. When I said I wanted "pretty young nude women" I meant PRETTY YOUNG NUDE WOMEN... not old, ugly male and female foreign nude tourists.

Copious wrath shall be forthcoming. Thank you for your cooperation. -signed the BIG GUY on the mountain, yo!"

Most American states are the size of countries elsewhere in the world and many of these states are repeatedly subjected to natural calamities throughout any given year. But because these calamities occur within the context of a larger country their significance is mitigated and easily dismissed as "natural".

So, you're saying those naked tourists are running around in the US as well?
