Little did we realise when we bought our previous property in Wales, a 17th Century farmhouse together with a three acre field, in February 1997 that it would soon be the focus of some weird and wacky events and media attention.

We had only been living in the house for about two weeks when a reporter from our local weekly paper told us that an Irish couple, on a walking tour of the area, had rested at the gate of our hillside field, and had apparently seen a vision of the Virgin Mary. They claimed that they had been healed of their ailments, a frozen shoulder and a cataract.

The national media took an interest in our story, and by June 1997 our quiet country lane was beginning to resemble a mini Lourdes. Many people came looking for a cure; sadly some were dying of cancer. Although I have not heard of anyone who visited our field having been cured of the disease, I have been told that lesser medical problems have responded positively to the vibes supposedly coming from the field. Two Americans claimed to have found healing. One left a note, and another contacted me via a website.

One evening in May 1997 I was standing at the gate of the field when I saw what looked like the popular image of the Virgin Mary. As she was unlikely to have looked anything like the picture book image, I am of the opinion I saw what I wanted to see, my mind having created the 'vision'!

Some years later the local paper reported that a gentleman had been saved from committing suicide after a trip to our field!

I too received a "miracle" cure when I had a painful frozen shoulder, which had defied the best efforts of my doctor. I stood at the field gate for about five minutes and found that it was considerably less painful, by the next day it was completely cured; I have not had any trouble with it since! I think my body"s own healing mechanisms kicked in, the field acting as a catalyst.

We have been informed by "healers" and "experts" in this sort of phenomenon that our field did indeed have special healing powers! Hmmmmmmmmmmm!

Whilst we lived there people were welcome to stand at the gate and enjoy the peace and tranquillity. If it helped them achieve healing for mind and body that was wonderful. We did not make any money out of our "miracle" field, in spite of being encouraged to do so, as we thought that would be wrong. My husband and I are non believers and sceptics, we didn't believe the field had supernatural powers.

Weird stuff of the 'haunted' kind soon began to occur in the house. If you can think of it in connection with a 'haunting' we experienced crazy activity almost every day for eleven of the 15 years we lived there. It all stopped abruptly in January 2008, never to be rekindled. There were stains in the form of Welsh words, monks, crosses and the face of a girl, which would appear on the walls. An apparition of a monk was seen from time to time. The moving of very heavy objects, including a gravestone, seemingly without human invention. Images appearing on photos, which weren't apparent when the photos were taken. There was much, much more strange stuff! There were plenty of independent witnesses, including six police officers who were invited to take the 'ghost tour', after finding our Down's Syndrome son who had got lost on a nearby mountain! They said they would sooner catch criminals any day of the week than live in our home!

In spite of the activity, my husband who has academic qualifications in science, and I, always looked for a natural explanation, like a hoax. The house didn't have a reputation for being haunted before we moved in! However we never did discover the explanation, but think science will one day explain all that is considered 'supernatural' today.

Our activity could be a nuisance, as I was constantly having to paint out the stains on the walls only for new different ones to appear almost immediately! However it never scared us, and actually the house had a pleasant atmosphere.

We eventually sold the property in 2012, as it was getting too much to manage after my husband had a brain haemorrhage in 2006, trashing half his brain!

This is a great story, OP. I'm tempted to check out the healing field, myself! Sorry to hear about your husband. I hope you two are managing ok. Thanks for sharing. Maybe you should write a book.

And yes, I think science is getting closer to explaining a lot of "paranormal" phenomena.

I think so too, and I sometimes wonder if that is such a good thing.

Science has been explaining a lot of "paranormal" phenomena for a long time yet people still choose to ignore the science and believe. Not that I do not have my own wacky beliefs.

I am hopeful that eventually science will explain everything, and there will be no excuse for believing in religion and the 'supernatural'.
