I assume the subject of aliens goes here too?

Are there scientists who study languages? For example, if we discovered a totally alien race not like ourselves at all, how would we communicate with them? How would we even begin to start to match the grunts whistles, clicks or any other noise with a kind of language we generally understand? What if they have tails like dogs and swinging a tail in a particular way means a particular thing? What if they look like rocks with no faces and just communicate via telepathy? What is they are intelligent snakes or worms which, as a race, have been around for millions of years?

We have not even begun to communicate with dolphins or chimps (as the some of the most intelligent species on Earth) apart from teaching them 'codes' which mean what we have decided they mean, so how could we possibly begin to understand an alien race with an intelligent developed language which is totally unlike any of ours?

I am definitely sure that communicating via telepathy is NOT the answer as we have not developed any skills in that direction and it relies on the alien race having the ability to force their thoughts into our heads, and to read our minds for the answer. That is not always a good solution because it places us humans at a great disadvantage. Our thoughts are undisciplined and when we cannot control what comes and goes, we have no ability to withhold the thoughts we dont want read by others.

Should they turn out to be anything other than totally transparent, honest, upright and 'good' without any other agendas, then we humans will be totally dominated due to them knowing our next move before we have even voiced it.

Wasn't there a Star Trek episode about this? Captain Piccard had to figure out how to talk to an alien who had a different language entirely. They finally figured it out after some doing.

My guess is that if aliens actually show up, they'll be smart enough to figure one of the Earth languages. Remember the music in Close Encounters?

I think it's more likely an alien race will find us before we find them. In which case the presumption is they're sufficiently advanced that communication with us won't be a problem.

A race of beings advanced enough to actually come here in interstellar craft would be like us trying to talk to an earthworm. Why would they even bother?

In one of his novels Orson Scott Card offered the groupings of aliens in three categories:

Those so different from us neither side would even realize the others were living beings.

Those similar enough that at least one side would recognize the other as living beings, but still too different to actually communicate. Indeed both sides might view each other as unintelligent even though they might both recognize the other was alive.

Those we would recognize as living beings, and with whom we'd be similar enough to to communicate.

Not really. We could build an interstellar craft right now with money and willpower. It wouldn't be very fast, but it could get your descendants to a nearby solar system in a few generations.

But the point is, we would have out brains invaded and our thoughts 'picked' very easily if they use telepathy. If they do not, then we need to learn to decode languages that our current animals use. This would at least go someway to show we could have a chance of knowing what any aliens say in the future.

If we leave it to them to communicate, then they hold all the cards, and they control us. Like being in a foreign country where you dont understand the language at all - very scary.

We do not seem to be able to decode either ancient written language or current animal language, and I dont think anyone would deny animals do seem to communicate at some level.

Sci-fi really has little to do with it, except to wish for what we could achieve in reality.

As a "Primitive Race" look how indifferent we are to the lives of lower species. Why would anyone imaging them to be any different. They would likely think of us as an invasive species with some intelligence and a Novelty. Or as Cattle?
