I did not experience visibly but there were two encounters I wouldn't dismiss for other explainations.
I was with my ex bf in a rented service apartment, can't recall was it first day we moved in or after. That night we were about to retire in bed and talking normal stuff, when suddenly a distinct sound interrupted us, instinctively we both went silent and looked at each other.
It was a very clear sound of someone sighing... right next to us. It took a moment before I asked if he heard it and he said yes, our innate reaction was to check the phone and it was well placed, we just knew the sound didn't come from next door or outside. We both knowingly didn't speak out any obvious thoughts and brushed it off that night. Later I refused to stay in the apartment anymore despite the 3 months lease.
I remember feeling rather uneasy and a strange stillness when first stepped into the apartment, there was a sense of "presence" like you're being watched" or something.
This happened when I was still teenager. Me and my friend were hanging out and walking through a quiet park late at night. Out of nowhere, we both smelled a scent of Jasmine flower passed by us. We looked around there was no frangipani trees and no one else was around, we just hurried our footsteps out of there. The chilling part of it is Jasmine scent or frangipani trees are said to be related with spirits.
I wonder if that strange stillness was the same thing I felt. This was over 17 years ago and we were out house hunting with the real estate agent. She took us to this one average looking ranch home in a busy neighborhood and I walked in and what I felt is very hard to explain. It was almost as if the house was 'devoid' of something but i don't know what that something was. From what I could see it was a nice looking house. It just had such an odd empty vibe to it. I guess a 'strange stillness' explains it better than I am. A lot of the other homes we saw were empty but none had that strangeness about them or affected me like that one did. I have no idea why I felt the was I did, but I refused to go into that house. I took one step into the house and I just couldn't go any further.

Yes and I still can not find words to describe how I feel/felt about the experience, in fact I've never told a soul and thought I was going crazy.
Circumstances were this..
I was in 9th grade, my good friend was killed the night before in a terrible dirt bike crash along with 2 other boys.
I had no idea the accident had occurred, I was walking down the hall to my locker and passed Dennis standing in front of his own locker, I waved or nodded to him and kept going. He gave no indication that he'd seen or noticed me.
Our little crew would always meet out front before class, there was a large circular garden. Dennis had a couple of older Brothers, the oldest was I believe employed by the school and the other was a grade or two above us. They were both out front and it was apparent that something was wrong. Another friend came up to me and told me the news.
I said don't mess with me I just saw Dennis standing at his locker.
Nobody has ever questioned or asked me about seeing him 14 hours after he was killed So I think it never went any further then the kid I said that to..
I was shocked and speechless as I had just no longer then 5 minutes ago saw Dennis at his locker..
I walked home from school that morning, I was 14, scared, sad, crying and filled with doubt over what I had just seen.

I posted a while back, but did not recall this until now. My mother passed away in 2007. About three months after her passing I went over and spent the night at her house because an estate dealer was coming over the next morning. After I got up, I walked into her kitchen to find all of the kitchen drawers open about 4 inches and perfectly lined up with each other. I blew it off and got on with my day, although I was sure I hadn't left them that way.
Later that afternoon, I felt like a nap and lied down on her sunroom couch (her favorite room). My eyes began to flutter awake and there she was, standing over me, smiling. She was wearing her sage green dress. By the time my eyes were wide awake she was gone. I recall that my first two thoughts were how was she standing in the middle of the coffee table and how beautiful and at peace she looked.
I related the story to my older sister on the phone that night and was met with silence at first. "Did I ever tell what I took to the funeral home to have Mom dressed in?" I said no (she demanded a closed casket, so I never saw her 'in repose'). It was the sage green dress.

I think what you experienced is the same " strange stillness"I had felt. It is hard to explain , but I could almost smell an air of hostile. The service apartment was situated in busy city, nice looking with modern design and well furnished. My ex even went to get some new pot plants, and photo frames to decorate the place to make it seemed more homely before I got there. But when I arrived, something just didn't feel right. I recall it had full length open view sealed glass window (like those of big hotels) facing the busy roads, for some reason gave me the chills when I looked at it and normally I enjoy window viewing.
Lived in a house that did not like closed doors.
(180 year old place on the underground railroad with a hidden stone room in the basement with ZION carved in stone. Lots of things happened, this was the scariest.)
Basement door was always open in the morning. Even if I bolted it shut.
I was finally leaving the house and packing up. Last night in the house and the movers would be in the first thing. So after I cleaned everything out of the room I would shut the door on the room. That way I would know everything was cleaned out of that room.
That night I spent the night in the finished attic since it had a built in day bed and everything else was packed.
Sometime between 2 and 3 I woke up to the sound of doors opening and closing.
I was pretty scared.
I had two options. Stay in bed or go investigate.
Yeah, I stayed in bed until it was light in the morning.
The next day, every door was open.
(That was just the scariest time, things happened on a regular basis in that place. Very glad to be out of it)
Don't tell anyone about this. Dont think anyone except those who stayed in the house would believe me.
Wow, after reading these threads, I guess the mind really does just start to go on people. Figments of everybody's imagination. There are no GHOST! The sounds you heard were probably that of an old house mixed in with a lot of wold coinceidences. My mother recently turned 60 and boy has she recreated the past. My 80 year old grandmother does much of the same. I suspect many here have done the same. I mean how do you see a full figure walking around your house and not even leave. Thats just crazy in its own right
If you have a scientific mind, that is one which is open to all possible factors, begin reading the theoretical physicists. Schrodinger, Michio Kaku, Stephen Hawking and many others were respected men of science in theoretical physics. They offer a number of scenarios which may explain what appear to be the presence of "ghosts" and other so-called supernatural phenomena.
Quantum physics theory is full of possible explanations. I am hopeful that as this science develops it may help explain the currently unexplainable.
In the meantime explain what gravity is and where a persons mind resides. OOOOoooooooeeeooOOO. Happy Halloween.
First time I ever ''saw'' a ghost it was a ghost cat and it revealed itself rounding door ways, coming down the hallway, or jumping up on the foot rail of the waterbed at night. It was only a dark shadow shape, definitely a cat, and usually one of those ''out of the corner of your eye'' things. Plus we had a cat at the time so I really never gave it any thought.
Until one night in bed when I saw it jump up in the dark and felt it settle on my feet while at the same time realizing that my kitty was curled up on my pillow.
Not too long after that the girl in the next apartment knocked on my door and said she really hated to bother me, but she wanted to ask me if we'd seen a ghost cat in our apartment and went on to tell me what they'd been seeing in theirs:same ghost kitty!
I've got other stories but I will hold off a bit...

Some of this stuff is just a scientific discovery waiting to happen. I agree; science is getting closer to an explanation.
I once saw an apparition. I could see nose to about knees. It looked like a young woman with long, dark, wavy hair. She was wearing a long Juliet style dress, crepe, rose to burgundy ombre. It reminded me of an old fashioned casket dress.
