As fate would have it, last night I finished Bruce Maccabee's Three Minutes In June: The UFO Sighting that Changed the World, which is entirely about the Arnold sighting and entirely sympathetic to the "alien craft" explanation. Arnold was almost an ideal UFO witness, so qualified and credible that Maccabee speculates that perhaps the sighting was "staged" for his benefit. The book also includes the credible sighting of a prospector who unquestionably saw the same craft as Arnold (from the ground, obviously) at the same time in the same place.
