I've never posted on this forum before (usually on writing, dieting, or politics). I would describe myself as fairly open regarding the possible existence of ghosts. Have had a couple of unexplainable experiences, but that's not what this is about.
Several years ago my mother purchased a second house. It's a doublewide, and she got a good deal on it because it was a previous year's model still on the vendor's lot (not used), and it had some damage that needed to be repaired after squatters had gotten into it. We don't know exactly what happened with the squatters, but the house had been treated as a crime scene. There was still fingerprinting powder in one place, and in one of the showers it looks like there are small, very pale bloodstains. My mother had it moved a piece of land she owns.
Anyway, my mother and brother have both stayed in the house and wondered if it could be haunted. They never got very specific about why they thought it could be haunted. I would describe both of them as being similar to me as far as belief in ghosts/paranormal. Recently, my husband and I spent a night there. Before we went to bed, I mentioned what my mother and brother said about the house. My husband is, or was, a complete skeptic. When morning came, my husband was exhausted and informed me that he'd been awakened numerous times by weird noises, bright flashes of light outside of the windows, and seeing shadowy shapes out of the corner of his eye. At one point, he was convinced someone was trying to break in, and even investigated inside and out with his gun. When I asked my mother more specifically what she'd experienced in the house, it was almost identical to what my husband had described. She'd even walked around with a weapon thinking there was an intruder. Separately, my brother had similar experiences, with the addition of hearing soft voices. I, meanwhile, had vivid nightmares, but wasn't awakened by noises or my husband being up, which is strange because I'm normally a very light sleeper. Husband is no longer a skeptic.
Does your experience resemble that of others label hauntings? Yes -- I've experienced similar in two houses I've lived in over the years: weird sounds, voices, lights, shadows, my name being called.
Paranormal possibilities other than ghosts of the dead: intrusion of organisms from some other "plane of existence" or parallel universe; playback of traumatic events recorded somehow in the fabric of space/time; demonic activity. Personally, I don't believe the spirits of the dead come back to haunt the living.
