I saw a topic elsewhere criticizing the movie The Matrix as irrelevant. I dismissed the comment at first. I don't think The Matrix is anything special despite its success, but if that can be considered the quintessential 1990s movie, then maybe it is irrelevant today.

The main theme in that movie is a warning to the audience to question everything-- question what the authorities tell you, question the limitations of your own abilities, etc. These days, it seems that people just believe what they hear with no skepticism. If a headline appears on a social media feed, then the headline is the truth, and there's no need to question it or the context.

Do you think it's because people are more dismissive of conspiracies or ulterior motives than the past? Or maybe it's because disseminating information has become so sophisticated, that regular people don't know how to analyze it?

I don't know which forum section was appropriate to ask this question.
