Maybe when you get a quiet moment, go inside and have like a conversation with whatever is there in your house. If your son is laughing then it does not sound like there is much to worry about and maybe you can voice your concerns over the lack of sleep when you are inside your head? If this is a grandfather-type figure then he/she will understand your concern.
I dont know about this kind of thing, but an hour or so missed sleep is probably not going to have much effect on the overall sleep time and dark circles under his eyes, is it? If you feel that the shadows under his eyes are due to the lost sleep at night, cant he have extra rest time later in the day to make up for it?
You know, I remember both of my kids doing this at around 18 mos to 2 1/2 years. They would sing and chat in middle of the night...it was a little unnerving at first...but it turned out that their sleep patterns were disturbed by teething...not in pain, just “off”.
I would go into their rooms & gently rub their backs, sometimes rock them & talk or sing softly...they usually returned to sleep.
After wondering what was happening with the first, I knew what was going on with the second.
One of my sons used to see a man dressed like a farmer in his room at night. His description of the man was so detailed, I had no doubt that it was real. His brother, who shared the room, could not see him.
Some very young children have the ability to see things that others can't....most of that ability gets lost as they get older.
I agree children are really perceptive to spirits and some are good and some are bad . I remember as a kid we moved into this house and every night like clock work we would hear thump thump thump down the stairs and my mom woke up thinking it was us going down to the kitchen and it was 'nt . So she did some research on the house and found out that a child had lived there in the 1900 s . His father was a dr and he was not around a lot and the child was being raised by the housekeeper . well one day the housekeeper was not watching him and he was chasing his ball down the stairs he tripped and broke his neck killing him instantly . The dr could not live without his son and his grief drove him to commit suicide in the house as well . Those spirits roamed that house . We moved out about 3 months later . The next family only lasted 6 weeks . Shortly after that the house burned down and the lot is still vacant . Yes kids are perceptive to spirits and it seems that the older they get they loose that ability to see spirits .
According to my mother, I was singing away as a baby in my cradle. So maybe it's nothing more than him expressing himself having fun in private, chatting and all.

My great grandfather's house, the child of the family that bought it mentioned, "I see a guy shaving and he doesn't have much hair" when he would brush his teeth.
