What happened after WW2 when they sent that 5,000 man expedition there looking for a Nazis base. Then they came back and that Admiral Byrd (sp?)was saying all sorts of weird stuff. They finally put him in an institution I think?

Admiral Byrd established the research base Little America IV in 1947 in Antarctica. A person named F. Amadeo Giannini wrote a book claiming there was an entry point to the hollow earth in the Arctic. Somehow this ended up in the fictional diary supposedly by Admiral Byrd, but Byrd was NOT in the Arctic in 1947. It was forged by a hollow earther and reads like a story from a fantastic tales rag from the 1940s.

The Inner Earth - My Secret Diary - Admiral Richard B. Byrd's Diary (February-March 1947)

An article that attributes the forgery to Giannini, which seems likely:

Admiral Byrd's tall tale? - The Skeptics Society Forum

Admiral Byrd died in his sleep at home, he did not end up in an institution:

That particular piece of made-up information is probably from the end of H. P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness", when one of the characters goes crazy when he sees the horror lurking on their other side.

Richard E Byrd did indeed live and die at 9 Brimmer Street in Boston, which is -- guess what -- in the Beacon Hill neighborhood, as anyone who's familiar with Boston will know. See:

Exactly what point are you trying to make - that the story of his living and dying at 9 Brimmer Street was a cover created by the government to hide the fact that he was driven insane by whatever "mystery" he found in the Antarctic and/or Arctic?

There is also the more recent occasion when I believe it was John Kerry, or Al Gore, saying there was something dangerous in Antarctica, cant recall the exact details of this, but remember reading about it.

I do not believe in the inner earth theory, but I do believe there may be something there that they do want the public to know about.

I'm not saying that he definitely died in an institution, but I am saying that the government could have easily arranged both his death and his supposed place of death.

This is a pretty far stretch from the fact that his location of death was mentioned in the obituary. It is easy to twist any fact to fit what you want if your standards are so low. BBC - Future - The enduring appeal of conspiracy theories

They did mention this, and the theory was that they discovered a lost city under the ice. I loved Journey to the center of the Earth as a kid and although I am doubtful, it's a lot of fun to think about. Rumors of this civilization being advanced with time machines and flying crafts and sort of a Shangri La paradise still get discussed regularly.
Everything from the Annunaki to Atlantis to a giant crashed UFO have been mentioned too.

Any discovery of even a simple small primitive town ruins would be big news though alone.

If people claim - truthfully, upon returning from an expedition, analyzing satellite or other "data", or projecting from "computer models" that nothing of note was found, where will the grant money, tax dollars, research-funding and talk-show appearances come from? No one ever gets funding to look at why there were no Yetis discovered living in hollow glaciers manipulating our weather with alien technology.
And - if one can make a "discovery" appear to be some potential threat - even better.
