I don't know if the FBI would be in on pot farming raids, but if there was some sort of organized drug trade they would. That seemingly would be an out of the way place for something like that though ... it's very sparsely populated. But, it's not too far from El Paso and Juarez, one of the most dangerous places for life and limb in the world.
The area is Lincoln Forest, and it does look a little scrubby, but it is a forest, and there are water sources. A Bridal Veil Falls. Pretty cool looking.

Our forest areas in CA are scrub, too, and they’re filled with illegal pot grows. Usually a couple of people on lookout.

It wouldn't seem hard for the nearest large town's newspaper to contact either the Post Office employees, observatory employees, or evacuated townspeople and interview them. What have they seen? What have they heard? When will they be allowed back? Where are they currently staying? I always dismissed the 9-11 conspiracies because there would have been just too many people who can't keep a secret about small stuff, let alone something like this.

There were many witnesses at Roswell. The government persuaded them to say nothing.

The F.B.I. is currently the subject of an investigation, the most serious in their history. There may be no connection, but we can't be sure. What we've read and heard so far makes no sense; that's incontrovertible.

Could be that that particular observatory was being subverted into doing something illegal with foreign spying. But then you have the feds who used a smoke screen to over the actual reason by locking down other observatories which fueled the alien UFO/ solar flare rumors which is what they helped create. I've said before, many of the conspiracy theories are started by the feds to make other conspiracies, real ones, look crazy.

Sunspot is at 9,000 feet, So pine trees grow. But it is high elevation and cool most of the time. So not a good place to grow pot. And drop a bit in elevation its sparse desert. Most of the people running drugs up from Mexico are in Arizona or closer to it. The border is pretty secure near El Paso and there are immigration check points all around on all the roads leading north in New Mexico.

Looks like it was a child porn investigation that led to the perp going crazy when the laptop he was using suddenly disappeared:

That's pretty crazy! I've never heard of a post office and town being evacuated because of child porn with a black helicopter involved as well, because of one janitor who hasn't even been arrested? Pretty nuts!!

Bob.

Court filings not anything that the FBI has said. The whole thing is odd. You would think that the presence of the FBI would be enough to keep this guy from doing anything. Why evacuate the entire area? None of this adds up.
