Maybe I am misleading myself or mistaken but I am fairly certain I have more than one stream of thought going on at the same time.

As I meditate, as I call it, I repeat a word/sound I learned from Transcendental Meditation many years ago. While I am doing that in one stream or focus, I have noticed that thoughts of other things are going on in another stream of thought.

I am sure I am not unique in this so I am asking you guys for any thoughts or experiences around this phenomena.

How many streams of thought do we have? I have always assumed it was just one.

The way I see it there's only one. It's very productive though. Can present many lines of thought at once. I think we've been designed to be able to focus our attention on whichever stream we choose. And that takes a kind of discipline that some of us, me included, are still rusty on. (Which discipline isn't really the topic of this thread).

Maybe it's not exactly the same, but if I'm trying to remember something (usually something not extremely important) and don't want to really focus on it then and there or research it, I do what I call putting it on the back-burner and go about my day. Inevitably, it will "pop" into my head as if I was thinking about it in the background somehow. I'd guess this happens with most people.

"Milligan also found the twenty-fourth - perhaps the most interesting - personality. It was a certain Teacher - a kind of meta-consciousness that had access to the memories of all other personalities and was able to build them in the correct order. As far as one can judge, it is thanks to the work of the Teacher (who actively interacted with doctors, helping them to find out all the necessary details of the patient’s life) Billy Milligan was able to gradually achieve integrity. "
Split: The Story of Billy Milligan
*I once had a very fast stream of thoughts, a dialogue that went into a trialogue. Later I was told that in addition to my Soul, I have three more.smile
