I've lived in two houses where strange things were going on (call them haunted, if you will): the house I grew up in, and an old farmhouse I rented with some friends during my college years. In both cases the strange things happened in the basement, attic, first floor, and second floor - though there seemed to be certain locations that were more active than others. (disembodied voices and weeping, "shadow people", small dark things shaking our beds and trying to crawl into them, curtains crawling against the window glass when there was no breeze or A/C to move them, flashing lights, cold spots, sounds of heavy things being dragged or falling down the stairs, weird sounds, mists, feelings of being watched and sudden terror without an obvious cause)

In the house I grew up in, the most active places were the dining room and adjoining piano room, and a sick room added above the kitchen. My sisters slept in the sick room and had a lot of experiences, then my brother and I had that bedroom and it was the same for us. The attic creeped me out - the door was in the bathroom, and I'd always face the door when I bathed fearful that something would come out for me. But the attic didn't seem to be more haunted than the rest of the house. Years later, my sister was in the attic and realized there was a false wall blocking off part of the attic. She pulled off a couple of boards, and showed me when I visited; there were Victorian era toys in there, a blackboard, and evidence of a fire.

In the farmhouse I rented with friends, the most active places were the living room and dining room, and the attic and basement as well -- but very strange things happened on the property outside the house, too. It's a daycare center today. The house was actually more active than the house I grew up in.

We lived with my grandparents, and my grandmother and her cousin were psychics. They had seances when I was four or five (my mother told me decades later that the dining room table levitated and moved around the room), and after that the phenomena seemed to show up. I sometimes wonder if whatever it was followed me to the other house, and it was only when I went away to college that I managed to get rid of it. My brother was a would-be psychic and ghost hunter, and one Christmas decided to have a seance in the dining room in the house we grew up in. My sister started thrashing around and weeping, and I made them break up the seance because at the same time I started having a strange probing sensation in my head. My brother is, I'm afraid, an idiot.

When you open the door wide, you can't always control who comes in, and if the wrong someone shows up, you can have a very hard time getting them out again.

LOL. Had to look that up. Interesting, but not that same. "The hat man" seems linked to sleep paralysis and appears to be something someone sees looming over them.

This guy just kind of flitted from the kitchen to the dining room and then to the basement door and disappeared. I figured it was just too much weed in the 70s until a friend with whom my daughter and I shared the house and who was home during the day while going through cancer treatments mentioned that she heard a lot of noises in the house when she was home alone. She'd hear footsteps upstairs, a door slamming, and then she hesitated and said, "And sometimes I think I see somebody." I said, "What do you see?"

And she said, "A tall guy with a long coat and a hat walks through the dining room." I was shocked to hear her say that, and the hair on my arms stood on end.

We didn't tell my daughter, but he was seen by others; namely, the cats. Every so often the cats would stop what they were doing and dash over to the basement door, meowing and sticking their paws underneath the door.

He/it wasn't scary, and it didn't seem to be aware of us. That's what I think it was just some weird memory loop somehow caught in the house. I rented the house, which was built in the 1890s.

Maybe hat mans nicer cousin.
Love cats but hated when mine would stare at nothing(wall, ceiling) intently as if something was there.

I always assumed it was the presence of an old timer, until i saw decades later that it was a thing. I think the hat and coat are a disguise.

Right! You won't find me seeking anything out like that, playing w/ ouji boards, looking up spells, & the like.

The fact that those things are real, and do work...says quite a bit imo!!

The question really should be...why are these things functional in the first place?

I hired a friend of mine years ago to replace a server at the agency I worked for. Within seconds of it being connected to the internet, you could see all the automated bots coming in to try and probe our security defenses, like a cloud of flies around a corpse. It's kind of like that, I suspect.
