Critters know when something's up.

There were these incredibly noisy frogs where I used to live. Thousands of them calling "coqui coqui coqui" all night long.

One night, they suddenly all shut up at once.
Silence for several seconds.

An earthquake struck.

Then the frogs went back to calling.

For earthquakes, I believe there are supposed to be S waves and P waves which I presume are P=primary and S=secondary, but they travel at different rates and frequencies through the Earth. Some waves come before the earthquake which is what the animals hear.

Ive heard that too, but why would that cause them to go silent?


They obviously dont feel its any threat to them, as they remained sitting in the same spot.
