Ghostly "phenomenon" often has meaning relevant only to the person who died and the person receiving or observing said signs from beyond; this suggests to me that not only is this energy from people who lived and died, but that their personalities and memories remain intact.
Yes, that's interesting, when you put it that way. Their consciousness lives on, that's what it boils down to. Consciousness is a very interesting phenomenon, when you get down to examining it.
I recommend the book "Consciousness Beyond Life", by Pim Van Lommel, MD. He's a Dutch cardiologist, who had so many instances of patients dying on the operating table, then reviving and trying to tell him about their Near Death Experiences (which he brushed off initially), that he decided eventually to take a closer look at what they were experiencing, and wrote a book about it. He did a lot of research, and also chronicled some instances of patients in surgery, whose indicators showed they'd died. This is a guy who didn't believe in NDE's, but after seriously looking into it, and logging his patients' experiences and the EKG responses, etc., he changed his mind. He also interviewed physicists, about the nature of consciousness, quantum entanglement, and the like, IIRC.
Some "ghosts" can also choose how they appear to the living. Some appear as their living loved one saw them (certain hair style, clothing, etc.). Some appear as their much younger selves, in their 20's or 30's. Some appear as they looked not long prior to death.

I think this is to some extent conflating ghosts with apparitions, NDE encounters, After-Death Communications (particularly ADC dreams) and similar phenomena. Ghosts typically appear the same to all who perceive them, meaning that a ghost of someone who died at age 70 in the early 18th century will appear that way to all who perceive him. To the extent ghosts exhibit any consciousness or awareness at all, it is typically a very minimal or fragmentary consciousness. This is quite different from the afterlife encounters in NDEs, ADCs and apparitions. Hence the notion that ghosts are not true afterlife encounters but rather surviving fragments or imprints of consciousness tied to a particular place and time. It may well be that in most cases the full-blown consciousness of the individual has "moved on." There are, of course, cases of ostensibly "earthbound spirits," but they (whatever they are) seldom manifest as ghosts.

I don't believe those who have passed on are mere fragments of the past ("living on in our memories," as it were); nor do I believe spirits -- or angels -- need be "earth-bound" (and necessarily tormented) to be in contact with us. I believe they survive as individuals, known to us and each other. But to each his own interpretation!
