I think many of them just get off on ruining the comfort other people find in their beliefs.

I think it is just as arrogant and foolhardy to know as a fact that there is no life after death as it is to know as a fact that there is one.
Well, the fact is,NO ONE on any of these CD forums truly knows what happens after death.

This is why I'm trying to be as open-minded as I can be about
it, so that I'm not nurturing any specific expectations one way
or the other. This way, whatever the afterlife is or isn't, it
doesn't send me into some kind of existential tailspin that
darkens (or further darkens) my experience thereof. If that
makes sense. No expectation, no disappointment and all that
jazz.

IDK. When you see how much of the “paranormal” and “supernatural” have been debunked with modern science and rational thinking, you can see how thousands of years ago things we now fluff off and think absolutely nothing of, would totally freak out people way back when.
All that phooey was most likely the basis for many of these beliefs.
And really, no disrespect, I have no issues with religion and such, but I know that now, when I read stuff from the Bible I’m just like, please, you gotta be kidding. Some of that stuff is so far fetched it’s almost comical.

And this is exactly why some things come as such a shock to people who have to have proof and who follow science. They are a fixated in their beliefs as much as any religious folk are. This approach is generally fuelled by fear of losing control of your worldview.

What you dont seem to understand is that "far fetched" is normal to a species living years, decades, centuries ahead of us in technology. The fact that you see it as almost comical, means that you do not have the ability to stretch your imagination to what life might be like in those times. That is why it will come as a shock to you.
