This is a strange story, Shelly Williams, a Primatologist was working to confirm the discovery a large ape like creature in the Congo...

https://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/scienc...sc.mysteryape/

I like this excerpt from the article...
"Years ago, she was driving an old truck and one of these apes walked by in front of her. It was walking bipedally (upright) and was taller than her, and she's six feet tall," Williams said.

Turns out, she was shot and paralyzed in 2009, unfortunately that ended the research!

Wasn't this later proven to be the Bili Ape, which is basically a kind of chimpanzee that does sometimes walk upright?

From the original link:

"We compared fecal samples from this unknown animal to the DNA of captive gorillas, bonobos, and chimps," Louis said. "Our preliminary data shows that the mitochondrial DNA is chimp-like."

They went on to speculate that it was: "chimp mother and a gorilla father". They were waiting for the nuclear DNA test and that was supposed to be back in 2003. By this time I am sure they would have a very good idea of what they were witnessing.

They never mentioned BF.

What would cause a gorilla to mate with a chimp?
Chimp-like could be anything. However, dont forget that we have a pretty complete database of DNA which is why we can identify most of the DNA samples we get.
The results have obviously been analysed by now, it is unusual not to have a follow-up on that.

Gorillas and Chimps can't mate and have offspring. They are not closely enough related. In fact, Chimps are more closely related to humans than they are to Gorillas. The notion that chimps and gorillas can have offspring is more silly than people and chimps having offspring. It doesn't work. That photo is a bonobo, a close relative of a chimpanzee. They are capable of walking upright for a short distance, just like a chimpanzee can.

From what I read that was what they originally thought. Then after more research the discovered them to be their own type of primate.

No, the mystery ape was different looking, and substantially larger, it had a flatter face and very muscular body...

while they didnt use the word 'Bigfoot'...the description says it all.

That is a great question! I have no idea.

OK, so a bit more research and we find this...

From photographs, the creatures were estimated to weigh about 100kg and their footprints, at up to 34 centimetres, were longer than a gorilla's.
But a year-long hunt by Cleve Hicks and colleagues from the University of Amsterdam shows there is only a negligible chance that the enigmatic apes are a new branch of the primate tree.
Hicks were able to observe the animals for a total of 20 hours.
I see nothing gorilla about them. The females definitely have a chimp's sex swellings, they pant-hoot and tree-drum, and so on, he told the British science weekly, whose report appears in Saturday's issue.

Samples of a DNA recovered from faeces also put the animals in a recognised subspecies of chimp, Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii.
Even so, the Bili apes are unusual, as they have a gorilla-like crest on their skulls and howl during the full moon.
The footprint of these things has a 'monkey thumb' which sticks out to the side of the foot, so is not a Bigfoot species.

All of this reminds me of the movie "Congo".
